WATCH | Team of the Year winners Longford Slashers ladies looking forward to All-Ireland Final appearance

The Longford Slashers Senior Ladies Football side was honoured as the Team of the Year at the 2022 Longford Leader Sports Star Awards, in association with Longford Sports Partnership, on Friday night, December 2 in the Longford Arms Hotel.

Longford senior champions for the past four years and the recently crowned Leinster Intermediate Club Champions will be striving to add an All-Ireland title to their roll of honour this Saturday when they face Mullinahone of Tipperary in the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Final at Croke Park.

In conversation with MC Tony Ghee, Longford LGFA Club Chairperson Bríd Nevin and Secretary Eamon Kenny spoke of their pride at the team's achievements to-date.

Mr Kenny spoke in glowing terms of the management team headed up by Conor Clarke, while Ms Nevin said the club were fortunate to have a fantastic bunch of girls who work so hard together. "We are very proud of them and we are looking forward to the All-Ireland Final at Croke Park."

Team of the Year - Longford Slashers senior ladies football squad
The Team of the Year Award winners are the Longford Slashers Senior Ladies Football squad.

This dedicated and talented team has won the last six County Championships that they have played in - Junior Champions in 2017, Intermediate Champions in 2018, Senior Champions in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

The foundations for the magnificent multiple triumphs was laid through the six-in-a-row County minor championships prior to the breakthrough in the adult competitions and to enhance their growing reputation Slashers also won the Leinster Club Intermediate title in 2022, defeating Skryne of Meath in a superb performance.

The experience gained in the disappointing defeat against St Sylvester’s (Dublin) in the final of this competition last year really stood to so resilient Slashers on this occasion as they gradually asserted their superiority in the second half and captain Aisling Cosgrove was beaming with pride when she stepped up to collect the Leinster Cup.

“Every member of the squad, 1 to 30, gave a great commitment in the fierce desire to win the Leinster title and the girls got their well deserved reward,” stated Slashers manager Conor Clarke in the aftermath of the Leinster Championship success.

Another chapter in the remarkable success story of the Longford Slashers senior ladies football squad was written at Michael Fay Park  when they beat the Mayo and Connacht champions Charlestown Sarsfields to reach the All-Ireland Club Intermediate final against Mullinahone (Tipperary) at Croke Park.
