THE music of Shane MacGowan and The Pogues will take centre stage in Longford this weekend when Boys from the Black Stuff join forces with acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter Mundy for a night of live music.

Friends and collaborators of MacGowan along with Mundy will play a great night of live Irish music in tribute to the late music star in Lyon’s Bar, Longford Town on Sunday at 8pm.

Boys from the Black Stuff bring the legendary songs of Shane MacGowan and The Pogues to the stage, following their long friendship and collaboration with MacGowan featuring Irish band Cronin.

In 2018, Cronin approached MacGowan with the idea of performing a series of concerts celebrating his extraordinary catalogue across Europe and the UK. His response came with one condition: he wanted to choose the setlist himself.

The result was a journey through every chapter of his remarkable career, reaching beyond The Pogues to include songs from his first ban. The setlist chosen by MacGowan will be performed at the music celebration in Longford Town this weekend.

Cronin developed a close friendship with their hero Shane MacGowan and, over the final twelve years of his life, became one of his most trusted musical collaborators for recordings, live performances and special events.

The relationship produced a remarkable body of work that remains unheard. Over the past eight years, Cronin and MacGowan recorded more than twenty songs together. These recordings are currently being prepared for future release in collaboration with the Shane MacGowan Estate, ensuring that new chapters of his musical legacy are still to come.

Speaking ahead of the special tribute concert, Mick Cronin said:

“I think the Pogues only played in Longford once in 1986 in the Fountain Blue. Shane told us that. We were doing a few of these shows while Shane was alive, before Covid like 2018, 2019.

He added that Shane said that they were allowed to do the tribute shows only if he chose the setlist.

“Everyone loves Shane McGowan. He's one of our national heroes.”

Mr Cronin is also pleased to have Mundy performing on the night. “It's great to have Mundy back in Longford, and Mundy hasn't played in Longford in a long time, since I think ten years ago.”

Tickets for the night of music cost €13.50 each plus a booking fee.
