Longford Leader Motoring: The new Audi A1 sportback

The smallest of the Audi family, this stylish new look car is available in 10 different colours and boasts increased interior space, innovative new technology and a range of assistance systems.

The Audi A1 Sportback boasts a distinctive new look having grown significantly in length but still retains a low-slung stance, emphasised further by the wide track and short overhangs.

The wide, low-placed Singleframe grille and the implied side air inlets dominate the front, above which are three flat bonnet slits which pay homage to the Sport quattro, the brand's rally icon from 1984.

The latest addition to Audi comes with a new look interior design for added comfort, whilst it is also fully digital and features a high resolution 10.25 inch display and a multifunctional steering wheel. The Audi smartphone interface also comes as standard with the vehicle.

Audi say the new A1 Sportback ensures a safer driving experience for owners thanks to the many assistance systems fitted, such as a speed limiter, front radar sensor and automatic emergency braking. The new A1 is initially available with a three-cylinder unit of 1.0 litre capacity engine , which is described as both powerful and efficient. Peak torque of 200Nm is available from 2,000 to 3,500rpm.

The new A1 can also reach 100km/hr in 9.4 seconds for the 7-speed S tronic version and 9.5 seconds for the 6-speed manual. The top speed in both types is 203km/hr.

All engines in the new A1 Sportback are also enhanced with turbocharging, direct injection and a particulate filter.
