Gardaí appeal for witnesses following fatal traffic collision on N5 in Co Mayo

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal traffic collision in Co Mayo.

The incident occurred at approximately 3.40pm when a car and lorry collided on the N5 at Carrabawn near Swinford.

A 61-year-old man driving the car was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. His body was removed to the mortuary at Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar for a post-mortem examination. The local Coroner has been notified.

A passenger in the car (male late 20s) was taken by Ambulance to Mayo University Hospital. The driver and sole occupant of the lorry (male 30s) was uninjured.

The scene of the collision is expected to remain closed until noon tomorrow (14/2/2018) to facilitate Garda forensic collision investigators, local traffic diversions will remain in place.
