Sergeant Niall Kilcrann Inspires Future Leaders at St Mel’s College
We were delighted to welcome back past pupil Sergeant Niall Kilcrann, who returned to St Mel’s College to speak with our 5th Year students about careers in the Defence Forces. It was a privilege to hear him reflect on his time as a student at St Mel’s and to learn how those years helped shape his path.

He spoke openly about his journey from the classrooms and corridors of St Mel’s to his current role in the Defence Forces, outlining the opportunities, challenges, and career progression he has experienced. Our students greatly appreciated his honest and inspiring insights into life in the Defence Forces, including the wide range of career paths available, the importance of commitment and resilience, and the personal development that comes with serving. As part of his visit, Niall made a special presentation of a commemorative plaque to our Deputy Principal, Jimmie Gacquin, a gesture we sincerely appreciate that reflects the strong and lasting connection he maintains with our school community.

In two must-win games, the boys fought hard, achieving a score of 34-47 for the 1st years and 29-39 for the 2nd years. Both teams now qualify out of the group stages into the Leinster semi-finals. Well done to all!
St Mel’s College Hurlers Shine in Championship Opener
A brilliant start to the group stages for St Mel’s College as we overcame Columba College, Killucan, with a scoreline of 3-12 to 2-04. A big shoutout to Luke Kenny, Jack McVeigh, and Donnacha Nolan, who all made their St. Mel’s College hurling debuts—fantastic performances from the lads! Special mention to Jack McVeigh for scoring a superb goal on his debut, straight out of the Joe Canning playbook. A mighty start to the championship, and the boys are already looking ahead to their next group game against Coláiste Clavin, Longwood, after the midterm.#
Innovative Robotics Demonstration at St Mel’s College
A big thank you to Alan Donaldson from Turf Tank for visiting St Mel’s College today to give a fantastic demonstration of the Turf Tank pitch-marking robot, especially in difficult conditions. It was a great opportunity for our students to see robotics in real-life applications and learn more about how technology is transforming sports field maintenance. We appreciate Alan taking the time to stay on afterward to answer questions from the St. Mel’s Robotics team and share his expertise. It was great to have Donal from Longford Sports Partnership & Gerry from Longford Rugby Club onsite to explore how other clubs may benefit from the use of Tuf tanks.
