Tensions are escalating in Longford town this week following another suspected feud related incident on Monday night in which two men, aged in their 20’s and 30’s, were stabbed.

According to the Gardaí, the assaults occurred in Teffia Park at around 9pm.

The attackers brought the more seriously injured of the two victims to Battery Road where they dumped him on the path outside Longford Garda Station

Paramedics were immediately called and the scene cordoned off.

Gardaí also closed off a scene in Teffia Park as paramedics tended to the second victim.

The area remained closed off on Tuesday morning as Garda investigations continued.

The stabbings are believed to be connected to a previous incident in which a shot was fired at a house in Garvey’s Close in Longford town the previous week.

Both stabbing victims were removed to the Midlands Regional Hospital Mullingar where they are being treated for serious injuries.

Earlier on Monday, in Annaly Park, two feuding sides were involved in a hostile altercation.

Speaking about the hostilities in the town, Councillor Kevin Hussey said the people involved are a law unto themselves.

“I personally feel one of the major problems we have is that the court system is too lenient. People are walking into court with 20 and 30 convictions and then walking back out the door with a small fine and six months to pay it. It’s a slap on the wrist.”

Cllr Hussey added, “The hard working people in Longford that get up every day and go to work are afraid to walk the streets of the town they’ve grown up in. The laws need to change. These people want to get onto social housing, they get their social welfare, but yet they walk the streets and do what they want. All they have to do is walk into court, tell a little sob story and they walk out the door smiling at Gardaí. The criminals are laughing at us.”
