Abbeyshrule Eco-Tourism Development Set to Get The Green Light

Longford County Council’s decision to approve contained 15 conditions

An eco tourism development proposed for a site at Clynan, Abbeyshrule, is set to get the go-ahead from Longford County Council, it was revealed today.

The proposed development will consist of 2 glamping cabins with an accompanying barbecue and hot tub area; a sensory dome surrounded by mature trees; 6 parking spots for guests; an 8.8 sq m sauna overlooking an existing pond; a geo-dome accommodation with accompanying barbecue and hot tub area; and an accessible geo-dome accommodation with accompanying accessible parking area.

The applicant, Richard Jones, also received permission for the requested construction of an Integrated Constructed Wetland (ICW) and all associated site works.

In granting permission, Longford County Council attached 15 conditions. Stipulations included the removal of the proposed structures should they become un-used in excess of one year. In such an event, the site is to then be “reinstated to agricultural use.”

The council’s conditions also specified that the glamping cabins and geo-dome accommodations can only be made available for short term holiday letting, (the maximum duration being 4 weeks) as this would be in the interests of proper planning and sustainable development of the area.

The owners cannot place advertising signage on the proposed development, in the curtilage of the development, “or on, or along the approaches to the site,” without first obtaining the written agreement of the Planning Authority. This condition, the council says, “is in the interests of traffic safety and visual amenity.”

The final granting of permission is expected to be made in 4 weeks time.
