A new initiative to tackle child food poverty will see preschool children across Longford receive free lunches under the €4.2 million Bia Blasta programme.

Fianna Fáil Senator for Longford, Joe Flaherty has welcomed confirmation from Minister Norma Foley that the scheme will be rolled out locally, benefiting 25,000 preschool children in disadvantaged areas nationwide.

The scheme, part of the Equal Start programme, will provide nutritious daily lunches through ten childcare services in Longford. Senator Flaherty said the move would “help children in so many ways,” improving their personal growth, wellbeing, and understanding of healthy eating, while also easing the financial pressure on families amid rising grocery costs.

“This is about giving children the best start in life,” he said. “It’s a practical and immediate step to address child food poverty, and it will directly benefit thousands of children who need it most.”

A total of €3.2 million has been allocated for the programme in 2025, with an additional €1 million available this year for participating services to purchase essential kitchen equipment — such as fridges, freezers, dishwashers, hobs, and ovens — to support meal provision.
