Longford has received a negative report over its current cleanliness, causing shock
The Longford TidyTowns chairperson said he is surprised the town was deemed 'moderately littered' in the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey but it was a useful reminder derelict houses need to be tackled.
Longford town, a former competition winner, lost its ‘clean’ status and fell to 30th position out of 40 towns in the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) league table.
Chairperson Michael Keenan said there was a strong belief an investment in new equipment would be reflected in the results.
"I am surprised because everyone involved, the council and all the groups involved were expecting a much more positive report.”

The An Taisce report stated: “While there was just one heavily littered site, it was the shortage of top ranking sites which prevented Longford from retaining clean status. By far the most heavily littered site surveyed was Congress Terrace/ Ward’s Terrace.”
Mr Keenan said the difficulty with derelict properties is very often the owner does not have money available to deal with it, there is nobody in them and the council does not own them and cannot enter.
