Sunshine and smiles as over 450 Longford children enjoy Garda Community Spirit Sports Day

The annual Garda Community Spirit Sports Day for schools from the Mid and South Longford areas took place at the Slashers GAA grounds recently and it was a big success.


The popular event, which had not been run for a number of years, returned on Wednesday, May 7 and it was organised by Garda Declan O Grady and Garda Anthony Scanlon.


More than 450 children attended along with a large number of transition year volunteers and the event was supported by Longford Community Safety Partnership, Longford Sports Partnership and Longford County Council.


The event began at 10am and it was described as a truly memorable day with lots of sunshine and community spirit.

The organisers thanked the transition year students from St. Mel's College and Meán Scoil Mhuire Longford for their hugely appreciated participation.


The day featured a wide variety of activities for all to enjoy - including the popular 'Tug of War' between the children and An Garda Síochána.


Six school awards were also presented to recognise outstanding participation in three categories which included 'Community Spirit Award', a 'Teamwork Award' and a 'Special Recognition Award'.

Longford Community Safety Partnership said well done to the participating schools that were involved and highlighted how their involvement and enthusiasm made the day special for everyone.

They have also thanked An Garda Síochána Longford, who organised the event and expressed their gratitude to Longford Sports Partnership, for all their support and commitment on the day, Longford Slashers Gaelic Football Club were also praised for generously hosting the event at their fantastic venue and Micheal Wall, from County Longford Youth Service, was commended for keeping spirits high as the popular DJ.

Longford Community Safety Partnership also praised volunteers and helpers from various organisations such as Leap Project Foróige, The Attic House Longford Longford Volunteer Centre who generously gave their time and energy and their sponsors Lidl Ireland and Fresh Today Shops.
