A young Ballymahon man completed his first Ironman in Lanzarote last Saturday in memory of his late mother and he has also raised over €10,000 in the process.

Seán Mulledy was delighted to complete the full-distance triathlon in a very impressive time of 15 hours and 53 minutes as temperatures hit 25C.

The Ironman is a significant challenge that tests fitness and endurance with a 3.8k swim, 180k cycle and a 42k marathon run.
Seán sadly lost his mother Eilish to cancer when he was only seven years old.

The Longford Hospice Homecare palliative care team were a huge support to his late mum and the family during her final days and they are Seán’s chosen charity.

His father Darren said the family are delighted by the 23 year-old's dedicated and determined efforts on the Canary island and Seán is on 'cloud nine'.

"As his dad I have say I’m so proud of him on what he has achieved, he went to Lanzarote on his own after training on his own with no coaching or teammates.

"Dedication and determination shows what you can achieve when you believe in yourself.

"Seán has cycled all over Ireland doing some amazing cycles with serious hills like ‘ the hills of Donegal’ the ‘Wicklow 100’ but he said cycling in Lanzarote was the hardest yet, he said several competitors were pushing theirs bikes up the difficult climbs."

Seán set a target of of raising €5,000 and he has now surpassed €10,000.

Darren stated halfway through the run he knew Seán was 'hurting' and feeling the strain.

"I told him from my video posts I uploaded on Facebook, people back home are behind you and the donations are flowing in.

"He smiled and said really, he can’t get over the huge support he has at home and this gave him a lift.

"He got back into a rhythm eating into those painful kilometres."
All of the funds raised will benefit many families in county Longford who may need to avail of the palliative care services.
