It is officially strawberry season and local fruit growers around the country are celebrating with an abundant supply of the nation’s favourite fruit

Local fruit growers around the country are celebrating with an abundant supply of the nation’s favourite fruit. This includes McCormack’s Fruit Farm from Colehill, which are currently harvesting its first strawberries of the season.

Bord Bia Quality-Assured strawberries are grown by a network of Irish strawberry growers and are widely available to purchase in supermarkets nationwide throughout the growing season from May to October. The Irish weather this summer, as always, will dictate both supply and demand for strawberries throughout the growing season.

McCormack’s Fruit Farm is one of the key strawberry growers producing quality strawberries for the nation to enjoy. The business proudly specialises in producing and supplying Bord Bia Quality-Assured strawberries for some of Ireland’s leading supermarkets and retail outlets.

Known for their distinctive and delicious taste, strawberries are also popular for their many nutritional benefits. By incorporating just one portion (approx. 80g) of strawberries in meals or as a snack, almost 100% of the daily requirement of vitamin C is provided. Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system and helps to reduce tiredness and fatigue. Strawberries also have a high-water content, acting as a natural way to hydrate and while small, the berries are also a source of fibre, which contributes to the overall function of the digestive system.

To best enjoy your fresh strawberries this summer:

  1. Store in the fridge until 1-hour prior to use (they taste best at room temperature).
  2. Do not remove the stalks until you are ready to use.
  3. When ready to eat or cook with, remove their stalks, wash them in water, bring to room temperature and serve.

Strawberries are a versatile and tasty ingredient to include in many sweet or savoury meals or can be simply washed and chopped for a treat. Whether enjoying whole or chopped into smaller pieces; the berries are a flavoursome addition to meals throughout the day.
