Longford and Mostrim GAA is mourning the death of legendary player, referee, and administrator Tom McLoughlin, who was inducted into the Longford GAA Hall of Fame in 2015.
Tom, who captained Mostrim to intermediate football championship success in 1967, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at the Midlands Regional Hospital, Mullingar.
Tom will be deeply missed by his devoted wife Nora, his sons Tommy, Kevin and Brendan, his daughters Kathleen and Noreen, his fourteen grandchildren and his two great grandchildren, his sisters Maureen and Lily in America, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, his good neighbours and many friends.
He was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Catherine, his sister Kathleen, Nellie and Rosemary (infant) and by his beloved daughter Mary.
Mostrim GAA paid tribute to the late Tom.
"We have sadly learned of the passing of our club president and one of Mostrim GAA's greatest servants, Tom McLoughlin.
"Tom was a true Mostrim and Longford GAA Laochra Gael. Tom had a huge passion and massive pride in Mostrim and Longford GAA. Tom served the club with huge distinction as a player and as an official. He was instrumental in the many Mostrim successes down through the years.
"Tom spent some time in America in his younger days, where he met his wife Nora. Tom and Nora came home to Edgeworthstown and settled and raised their family in Bracklin. While in the States, Tom stayed invloved with the GAA, and he won a senior championship medal in New York in 1957.
"When Tom returned home to Mostrim, he got straight back to the playing field and was instrumental in helping the club move from Junior ranks to senior grade. He was a cornerstone of the team that won the junior championship in '66 and was captain of the intermediate championship winning team in 67. The Mostrim team to win the first senior championship in 1974 Tom was secretary and selector.
"Tom was a huge driving force in our club, continuously striving to improve the club both on and off the field. As well as being a dedicated player, Tom was also a highly respected referee and was referee in two senior county finals. Tom served as an officer and chairman of our club for a number of years. He was instrumental in developing Hugh Devine Park, and the facilities we now enjoy are due to the hard work of people like Tom, whom we have been blessed to have in our club.
"As well as giving many years service to Mostrim GAA, Tom also held many positions on Longford GAA county board. He was a referee and an official for many years. Tom was deservedly inducted into Longford GAA Hall of Fame in 2015.
"Mostrim GAA would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to Tom's wife Nora and all the McLoughlin family. Tom was a true Mostrim GAA great and will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all in our club. Ní bheidh a leithéidí arís ann!
"Ar dheis Dé go Raibh a hAnam."
Longford GAA also paid tribute.
"Longford GAA is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Tom McLoughlin, father of Longford GAA Management Committee member, Tommy, and Club Longford Executive member, Brendan.
"A proud club man, Tom was President of Mostrim GAA, and served the club, as a player, referee, and administrator. Tom won Junior and Intermediate Championships with Mostrim as a player and was Secretary and Selector when Mostrim won their first Senior championship against St Patrick’s (Ardagh) in 1974.
"Tom served Longford GAA as a referee, taking charge of three county finals, as Treasurer from 1995 to 2002, and as a Mostrim delegate to the County Board for many years. In recognition of his service to club and county, Tom was inducted into the Longford GAA Hall of Fame in 2015.
"Longford GAA wishes to extend our deepest sympathies to Tom’s wife Nora, and the extended McLoughlin family at this sad time.
"Ar dheis De go raibh a hAnam."
