The actions of two protestors over LGBTQ+ material which led to the closure of Longford Library has been strongly criticised by a local Fianna Fáil representative.

The pair entered the premises across from Longford Shopping Centre shortly after 11am on Thursday and claimed that some LGBTQ+ material there was inappropriate for children.

Gardaí were called to the scene after multiple requests were made by staff to the two individuals to stop filming inside the library.

Officers attended and directed the pair to leave the area and they eventually did.

Cllr Uruemu Adejinmi gave a scathing assessment of the actions of the pair, which led to the closure of the facility,
"It is unacceptable for staff to be harassed in that manner," she said. "These individuals, who do not even live locally, came in and caused a commotion roaring at staff and talking about books that they consider inappropriate."

Cllr Adejinmi stated every person is entitled to air their opinions and views but she stressed there should be limitations and guidelines on how this is done.

"Harassing staff who are just doing their jobs is not the way," she said. "If people have issues, they should contact their local representative or their parliamentary representative and air those issues."

Cllr Adejinmi said it is very unfortunate that another incident has occurred at the facility one year after several protesters targeted the library in August 2023.

That was as also part of the group's attempt to have LGBTQ+ reading material removed from the premises.

Longford Pride has condemned the protest and described it as an attempt to control the opinions of others.

Cllr Adejinmi said it is not fair on parents who are bringing their young children to the library.

They are encouraging them to read books and grow their mind and it is wrong that they have to encounter such appalling behaviour,” she added. "Their needs to be measures to d people who repeatedly conduct themselves in this manner."
