No joy as 'moderately littered' Longford continues to slip down IBAL litter league table

The first national litter survey of 2024 by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) shows Longford town as being ‘moderately littered’ and it has slipped to 35th position in the ranking of 40 towns and cities.

The study reveals an overall improvement in litter levels, and a decrease in cans and plastic bottles on our streets on foot of the Deposit Return Scheme.

The An Taisce report for Longford town stated:

"There were just three top ranking sites in Longford this time around – quite the drop for a former IBAL winner.

"Pig Market Lane was one of those very much deserving of the top litter grade – it was very attractively presented and maintained with an absence of litter throughout.  It was encouraging to see the Recycle Bank at Market Square so well presented.

"The residential area of Congress Terrace was mixed – the majority of homes were in very good order but there were too many vacant / boarded up premises which harboured heavy levels of a wide variety of litter.

"Market Square has some attractive planting – unfortunately this was choked with litter. Congress Terrace was a litter blackspot.
