Four Longford community centres have been allocated €368,760.07.
Drumlish Community Association Company is to receive €259,909.23, with Colmcille Community Centre CLG receiving €58,850.84 under the new Community Centre Investment Fund announced by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD.
Ardagh and Kenagh Community Centres are to each receive €25,000.
Drumlish Community Association plan to develop three state of the art fully accessible activity/meeting rooms for a variety of activities.
Nationally, funding of over €33 million was announced for the upgrade and development of 278 Community Centres.
The funding will be used to upgrade, renovate and refurbish Community Centres, Parish Halls, Scouts Clubs, Youth Hubs, Family Resources Centres and Sports Complexes across the country.
Minister Humphreys said, “The local community centre is at the heart of our towns, villages and parishes right across the country.
“Our Community Centres come in many different shapes and sizes and provide a wide and diverse range of services and activities.
“The Community Centre is where the children go to play sport; it’s where meals are provided for our senior citizens; it’s where the local dramatic society perform; it’s where the ICA, our Men’s Sheds, Youth Clubs and other local organisation come together for their meetings and events.
“Most importantly in the month of December – the Community Centre is often the place that Santa will come to visit to meet the local children!
“It was a priority for me as Minister for Rural and Community Development to put this new funding stream in place and I am delighted to announce the successful projects today.”
Senator Micheál Carrigy said, “This announcement is the largest single investment in our community centres in decades. Community centres are valued shared spaces and are very much at the heart of Longford towns and villages. I hope this funding assists in making them even better in the provision of services to people all across Longford.”
He added, "I also want to congratulate the successful projects and to thank them for the vital work they do in providing services in their local communities. This funding will deliver high quality capital projects for community facilities that bring benefit to the local community.”
