Disappointment that no new Garda recruits have been assigned to Longford: 'I would question the fact that the town has not had any new recruits from the last two classes in Templemore'

In the wake of last night's violent double stabbing attack in Longford town, Councillor Seamus Butler also called for more Garda resources to be allocated and he also questioned why the town has not had any new recruits from Templemore being stationed there.

He said, “I have been saying it for so long that we need more Gardaí. Here we have yet another unfortunate serious stabbing. This is unusual for Longford. Stabbings are rare here and I hope it’s not a developing practice.”

Cllr Butler continued, “I would question the fact that the town has not had any new recruits from the last two classes in Templemore. I don’t believe we are adequately resourced to deal with the level of serious incidents that have been occurring in Longford on a more regular basis."

He concluded, "What we want to do is take preventative measures and to have a much more visible presence of Gardaí on the streets of Longford Town.”

Cllr Kevin Hussey also called for more Gardaí in the town.

"I am very disappointed that we didn’t have any new recruits here in Longford.

"But to be fair, when people are feuding the way they have been these last number of weeks, we could have one hundred Gardaí in the town and they will still keep doing the same thing. They are a law unto themselves.”
