The 'desecration of Longford jobs' and the RTÉ crisis is to feature in a new book by Ciarán Mullooly.

The former Midlands RTÉ correspondent Ciaran Mullooly, who covered many major stories across the region for a quarter of a century, is set to publish a new book.

Mr Mullooly revealed on social media that his new book will be published in September and will cover a mixture of topics including his views on the latest crisis which has engulfed the station over payments to Ryan Tubridy.

The journalist, who retired from the station in June 2021 after 27 years, has been outspoken about the crisis and highlighted some of what he believes have been the causes.

The book, to be published on September 16, will recount his coverage of Midlands news and touch on community projects in rural Ireland.

He also wrote Death On Holy Thursday - The Shooting Of John Carthy In Abbeylara and Back To The Future - Reflections on rural Ireland, recession and renewal over 30 years of journalism.

Mullooly, a former reporter and deputy editor with the Longford leader and Cavan Leader newspapers, retired from the national broadcaster in June 2021 but has been highly critical of the management of the station in Donnybrook which led recently to the replacement of Ryan Tubridy's RTE radio show.

Regeneration and the need for a proper and just transition in the midlands are central themes of the new book:

"The desecration of hundreds of jobs on the bogs in county Longford will be one of the central focuses of this next book, "Ciaran said this week, "I am shocked the way families who worked hard all their lives have been treated in the last few years and I am bringing forward new ideas and proposals to try and deal with it."

Details of the new book launch will be issued in next week.
