Gardaí launch investigation as fire engulfs Midlands building site

Gardaí have launched an investigation after fire engulfed a Midlands building site.

Gardaí are investigating criminal damage by fire, that occurred late on Thursday, May 18 at a building site in the Monksland Industrial Estate in Athlone, County Westmeath. 

Two excavators and a small digger were significantly damage during the course of this incident.

The fire was extinguished by local fire services.

'Grave concerns' new refugee centre is set for Longford town

Longford County Council chiefs are coming under mounting pressure to "urgently clarify" mooted government plans to open a proposed refugee centre in Longford town.

 

The scene was preserved and a technical examination was conducted.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the M6 motorway east-bound between Ballinasloe and Athlone on Thursday, May 18 between 11pm and midnight are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Man to stand trial over threat to kill man in Longford town

A man is to stand trial for allegedly robbing and threatening to kill or cause serious harm to another man in Longford town earlier this year.
