Longford Leader columnist Mattie Fox: Tackling the drugs problem

The Officers of, and the gardaí themselves, must make more noise about the drugs problem in Longford town, and county.

Granted, they are severely compromised by the lack of resources, but surely they can still be a nuisance to those dealing drugs. It’s already been proven in Dublin that it works. That was several years back.

Since then the funding of the gardai is abysmal. However, nothing succeeds to damage the illegal substance community as much as high profile and visible interference. In short, it works.

Visible and noisy interference in the smooth sale of drugs. Yet the dealing continues in some cases quite visibly even apparently in one case through a window which various users knock on, in order to be ‘served’.

This cannot continue.
