Brighter days beckon in another Longford success

In the knowledge that a vital victory was required against the previously unbeaten table toppers Carlow in order to keep the promotion hopes alive, Longford showed a lot of character to come out on top in the crunch clash at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday last.

A terrific second half display against the wind succeeded in extending the current unbeaten run to four matches in the National Football League and with Antrim doing Longford a big favour with a win over Wicklow, brighter days may be ahead for Mike Solan’s revitalised side.

Ever since the great escape in Dungarvan against Waterford the course of the season has changed considerably for the rapidly improving midlanders who now occupy second position in the Division 4 table and in control of their own destiny.

After playing for five weekends in a row, Longford now have a well earned rest from competitive action in the build up to the eagerly awaited local derby against Leitrim in Carrick on Sunday March 15th.

A win against the out of contention neighbouring rivals and another success at home to Wicklow a week later (Sunday March 22nd) will guarantee Longford a place in Division 3 next season and hopefully that will be the case.

The Longford senior hurlers are on the brink of promotion to Division 3 following their fine win over Lancashire in Abbotstown last weekend with maximum points from four fixtures and are confidently expected to extend their impressive run of results against Warwickshire in Birmingham this Saturday, throw-in 2.30pm.
