New Re-turn DRS machine in Longford store helps raise €450 for worthy cause
Longford and Leitrim’s first ever Re-turn bulk machine launched
THE first Re-turn DRS (Deposit Return Scheme) Bulk Machine in Longford and Leitrim has been launched.
The new machine was launched in Fresh Today, Axis Centre, Longford on Thursday, October 8. There were live demos and giveaways on the day.
Speaking to Longford Live, Michael Ellis of Fresh Today said he was “very happy” with how the launch went and that the customers think the machine is great.
“It went very well. There was a good turnout on the day even though it was very wet. There was a great customer response to it, people love it.”
Mr Ellis said they have placed the new machine in a nice sheltered area. “It's nice and comfortable putting your stuff into it, it's nice and enclosed.”
He added that they felt there was a need for a Deposit Return Scheme machine in Longford.
Seamus Regan, Fr Michael McGrath and Eamonn McGowan used the machine to return a large quantity of bottles and cans and managed to get a €450 return which they donated to the Rise & Shine Trust.
The volunteer-led charity bring people with additional needs on pilgrimage holidays to Lourdes and on holiday in Ireland. They fundraise and rely on private donations.
Mr Ellis appealed to locals using the machine not to put bottles or cans with liquids in the machine. “The customers think it's great, just have to be careful putting in empty bottles and cans with nothing in them.”
Longford TD Micheál Carrigy and Senator Joe Flaherty both attended the launch event. Many sports clubs were represented at the launch from Edgeworthstown, Granard, Dromard, Carrick on Shannon, Clonguish GAA and Longford Rugby Club.
