Deniese O’Flaherty speaks to Longford Town player Ryan Connolly, whose goal helped his side to a win over newly-crowned league Champions Athlone Town on Saturday night. The victory ensured Longford Town secured a place in the promotion play-offs by finishing in second place in Division One of the Airtricity League.
Longford Town overcame their fierce rivals by two goals to one in an entertaining Midlands ‘El Clasico’ fixture.
It was Athlone who drew first blood, though, when Enda Curran put the home side ahead early in the first half. However, Longford pulled a goal back thanks to a Gary Shaw header midway through the opening period, before Connolly’s crucial strike found the net on the stroke of half-time to send Longford Town into the play-offs, taking some of the sheen off Athlone’s cup presentation in the process.
Mervue United will provide the opposition in the opening promotion play-off fixture.
In a dramatic final matchday in the regular league season, the Galwegians grabbed a third-place finish with victory over Wexford Youths, while Waterford United dropped out of contention after a surprise defeat at the hands of Cobh Ramblers.
The first leg of the promotion play-offs will be played in Fahy’s Field, Galway, this Friday night, October 18, with the return fixture taking place at Longford Town’s City Calling Stadium on Saturday, October 26.
The winners will progress to play a two-legged showdown with the team that finishes 11th in the Airtricity League Premier Division, with the victors of that encounter securing Premiership status for the 2014 season.
