Longford's Iarla O'Sullivan in action against Wicklow during round two of the Tailteann Cup Picture: Syl Healy
While Longford are almost certainly guaranteed a place in the knockout stage of the Tailteann Cup due to their superior score difference, there is still something at stake in their remaining Group 3 fixture at O’Moore Park in Portlaoise on Sunday, throw-in 3pm.
Part of a double bill along with the ‘dead rubber’ meeting of table toppers Limerick and pointless Wicklow (1pm), a win or a draw for Longford will clinch second spot in the group and the added bonus of home advantage in the preliminary quarter-finals the following week.
On the evidence of their most emphatic win over Wicklow by the wide margin of 11 points in the previous round at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, Longford are looking good to overcome Carlow but can take nothing for granted.
Inspired by their surprise win over Wicklow in Round 1, Carlow were then well beaten (1-19 to 0-14) by Limerick at Netwatch Cullen Park but showed a lot of spirit to be on level terms at the break.
Crucial goals the decisive factor in Thomas Davis win over Longford’s Killoe
While Killoe just failed in their bid to win the Leinster Senior Football League Division 1 title, their participation in this competition was a very useful exercise in the build up to the start of the county championship at the end of July.
The dangerman in the full-forward-line is Darragh Foley, deadly accurate from both frees and play, but few can argue with the fact that Longford are the stronger side and it will be a big surprise if they fail to emerge victorious at O’Moore Park.
The entire attack got their names on the scoresheet against a poor Wicklow outfit and more of the same sharp shooting should suffice for Paddy Christie’s charges in their bid to earn a crack at New York or one of the best placed third teams in the next phase of the Tailteann Cup.
The majority of the same Longford and Carlow players featured in the O’Byrne Cup game at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park back in January when the home county cruised to a comprehensive 0-15 to 0-4 victory and are expected to confirm their superiority over the Barrowsiders.
