Ex-Kenagh United player Mia Murtagh, a student at Mercy Ballymahon Secondary School, was in action for the Republic of Ireland Schools soccer team in the U-15 Girls International Schools Tournament last week.

Midfielder Mia is a rising star who plays at underage level for Shamrock Rovers in the National League and had the honour of captaining the Republic of Ireland team against Northern Ireland in the final round of the Bob Doherty Cup at Athlone Town Stadium.

Ireland won 1-0 with Mia almost scoring a second goal for her country in the closing stages of the match. She performed exceptionally well throughout the tournament that also included games against Scotland (2-1 win) and the eventual winners England (2-1 defeat).

Mia earned the proud distinction of being selected as Ireland’s player of the tournament and her prize was a jersey donated by the Republic’s senior women’s international Jess Stapleton.
