RTÉ has confirmed that it is ending Upfront with Katie Hannon after three seasons on air, marking a major shake-up to its current affairs programming.
The Monday night series, which launched to Irish screens in January 2023, gave a platform to in-studio audiences and weekly panel discussions on topical issues. It aired its final episode in May and will not return this September.
In a statement, Hannon said she was "very proud" of what the team had achieved.
"We managed to buck the international trend and actually grew our audience on linear television and our digital footprint," she said. "It was a privilege to work with our small team of talented and hardworking colleagues led by our editor Janet Traynor.
"I also want to thank all of those who came into our studio and trusted us with their stories and contributed to the national conversation on the issues that matter to all of us.
"I'm disappointed that we won't be able to keep that conversation going,” she finished.
RTÉ said the decision was part of its new strategic priorities, citing the need to "serve audiences beyond traditional linear TV schedules and meet the needs of younger, underserved and underrepresented audiences".
The broadcaster also pointed to resource pressures, saying production was being wrapped "due to the prioritising of people and financial resources."
While Upfront may be coming to a close, Hannon, a seasoned journalist with over 14 years reporting for Prime Time and years hosting RTÉ Radio 1's Late Debate and Saturday with Katie Hannon, is expected to remain a central figure in RTÉ's plans.
She will continue to present the Behind the Story podcast and is also due to front a new television series ahead of this autumn's presidential election.
"Other employees will continue working with RTÉ News & Current Affairs - there are a number of internal vacancies and options for redeployment within the division," the statement added.
The move comes as long-time Liveline presenter Joe Duffy prepares to retire this week, with speculation mounting that Hannon is among the frontrunners to take over the iconic daily radio slot.
Currently, the bookmakers have Hannon installed at a staggering price of 1/5 to be the next host of Liveline.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "It looks as though a decision has been made when it comes to Joe Duffy's replacement... with Upfront now cancelled, Katie Hannon's diary is now clear for the iconic gig, and the odds suggest it's hers."
