Five-year-old boy dies after road crash in Co Laois

A five-year-old boy has died following a road collision in Co Laois on Saturday afternoon.

The crash, involving a car and a pedestrian, took place at around 4.20pm at Kilminchy in Portlaoise.

The boy, a pedestrian, was seriously injured and removed from the scene to Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise.

He was pronounced dead a short time later.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place.

The female driver of the car, aged in her 40s, was not injured.

The road has been closed overnight and a technical examination is due to be carried out by collision investigators on Sunday morning.

Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them, including those with footage.
