President Michael D Higgins is to spend the night in a Dublin hospital after undergoing "precautionary tests".

The 82-year-old President was taken to hospital earlier this Thursday evening after feeling unwell.

A medical team attended the Áras an Uachtaráin to assess his condition, and while it is understood that initial tests did not show anything wrong with the president, he was taken to hospital as a precaution following medical advice.

In a statement, Áras an Uachtaráin said that a decision was made to proceed to hospital to for President Higgins to undergo tests, the initial results of which have been positive.

"The President, who will remain in hospital overnight, is in excellent spirits and has thanked the medical staff for the care he has received."
