An Irish woman who inspired a hit song by her grandson - internationally renowned singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran - has passed away aged 98.
According to RTÉ, Wexford-born Anne Mary Sheeran (neé Mulligan) passed away peacefully on April 25 at Castle Gardens Nursing Home in Enniscorthy, with the funeral taking place today (May 3) in St. Patrick's Church Monaseed Gorey.
She was reportedly the inspiration for the 2017 song 'Nancy Mulligan', which reportedly tells the story of her love story with her husband.
The popular song peaked at number 1 in the US and number 3 in Ireland.
Her death notice on Rip.ie reads: "Beloved wife of the late Bill and loving mother of Jim, Bill, Peter, Chris, John, MaryAnne, Bridget and the late Sally and sister of the late Thomas, Jim, May, and Peggy."
Approximately a hundred people have submitted their condolences on Rip.ie, with well-wishers describing her as "a truly lady" and "gentle soul".
Fans of Ed Sheeran also commented, with one stating, "Sending my deepest sympathies to Ed Sheeran on the loss of your granny and to all your family thinking of you all at this sad time, lots of love one of your fans."
According to RTÉ, the late Mrs Sheeran was a nurse praised for her work in the community, and was also a keen golfer and founding member of the Past Lady Captains of County Wexford Golf Society.
She was involved in many clubs and societies in her locality - including Courtown Golf Club, Gorey Cricket Club, Gorey Musical Society, and Gorey Boxing Club - and made significant contributions to each.
Gorey Boxing Club reportedly held a guard of honour at Ms Sheeran's funeral, with Niall Kennedy of the club explaining that she was the honorary president due to her involvement in its foundation.
"Anne was the one who convinced her husband to financially contribute to purchase the land to keep local clubs open. She became a grandmother to every child who went in the door.
"Up to about six or seven years ago, she would be attending every event and getting involved in fundraising.
"She was one of the nicest people you could meet, so kind with her time and always glamourous."
