Longford's Tyre Warrior warns followers about new NCT rules

Ciarán McCormack, aka the Tyre Warrior, posted the informative video on his social media.

South Longford social media star, Ciarán McCormack, better known as Tyre Warrior, has warned of a change regarding the legal tyre requirements which, if not adhered to, could result in 12 penalty points from Gardaí or, if you’re going for the NCT, a Fail Dangerous defect which will result in the car being kept at the centre and requiring a tow truck.

With a legion of followers - namely 470K followers on TikTok, 184K on Instagram, and 62K on Facebook - the Tyre Warrior took to his social media to who motorists what they need to watch out for.

The Ballymahon man said, “I’ve got some important news. There’s new NCT rules. If your thread depth is below the legal limit, which is 1.6 in Ireland, that is now classed in the NCT centre as a Fail Dangerous defect.”

“You won’t be allowed to drive it off the lot, you will have to have it picked up, or take the wheels off, bring them in to me or have me come out and fix them.”

Referencing a car that had come into his garage in The Pigeons in Westmeath that morning, he added, “This car came in with a Fail Dangerous with a tyre.”

Holding up the NCT fail notice, he told viewers, “This was on windshield. So he wasn’t allowed to drive it off the lot. He had to have the car picked up brought over to me. If this (a Fail Dangerous document) is on the windshield, you’re not going anywhere.”

Showing one of the tyres that had been rejected by the NCT, the Tyre Warrior added, “This is the trye that failed. It’s just below the legal thread depth and he (the customer) had to have it picked up and brought to me. Before this, you could have a defective tyre and you could drive to the local shop, get the tyre swapped out and then drive back. You can’t do that now. You’ll have to have the car lifted. Don’t let this happen to you.”

While it may be an easy issue to miss if you're unaware of what to look for, the Tyre Warrior warned that ignoring it could potentially result in a driver being disqualified if all four tyres are under the legal thread limit.

He explained, “Also, as a note, if you have a defective tyre, it carries three penalty points. So if you have 4 defective tyres, that’s 12 penalty points. You’re off the road. Don’t let that happen. Come in and let me check them out for you.”
