Man allegedly found with €7k in cocaine Longford District Court hears

A man found with almost €7,000 of cocaine in Longford has been remanded on continuing bail.
Evan Lynham (22), of Tiermachen, Donadea, Naas, Co Kildare, was allegedly caught with over €6,800 worth of the Class A drug after officers from the Roscommon-Longford Divisional Drugs Unit stopped a car at Cloonahussey, Edgeworthstown, Co Longford on July 31 2019.

Judge Bernadette Owens accepted jurisdiction, meaning the case was deemed suitable to be heard at District Court level as opposed to the more serious Circuit Court after details relating to the case were read out in court.

Sgt Mark Mahon said Mr Lynham was in a car pulled in by gardaí at around 7:30pm.
He said a package containing white powder was retrieved which labaroatory tests later turned out to be cocaine.

John Quinn, defending, indicated the package was found in the car, an inference which was rejected by Sgt Mahon who said the drugs were retrieved “from his person”.
Judge Owens, upon accepting jurisdiction, granted the full disclosure of all statements and prosecution evidence relating to the case to be furnished to the defence.

Mr Lynham, in a separate matter, was also charged with stealing an eight pack of Bulmers from Tesco, Longford Shopping Centre, Townspark, Longford on July 17, 2020.

The accused, who the court was informed, was currently in prison serving a sentence for an unrelated matter, stood patiently in the custody suite as evidence was read into the court record.
It was revealed he is not due for release until April next year.

After being put on his election by Judge Owens, Mr Lynham pleaded guilty to the aforementioned offence.
That matter, together with a section 3 and 15 drugs charges, were adjourned to a sitting of Longford District Court on February 7, 2023.
