Longford's long wait for a state of the art skate park looks set to come to a successful conclusion after local politicians gave the green light for council chiefs to begin work on its development.
Elected members approved part 8 planning for the long sought after project on a site inside the county town's former greyhound track.
It comes after local authority officials snapped up the Park Road venue earlier this year and after council bosses agreed a proposed location for the new facility after holding talks with Longford Youth Service and a local skate park committee in September.
The brekthrough was announced at a Longford Municipal District meeting last week.
"It just goes to show if you keep pushing for something, good things will happen," said a jubilant Cllr Peggy Nolan.
"This (development) was imperative. When you look around at other counties and neighbouring ones at that, they all have skate parks.
"There is no better place for it than Longford Greyhound Track, it's close to the railway and local businesses and will be a huge tourism boost for the town."
