Rough Magic's visit to Longford in the guise of the amazing Calibri Triplet Family Band was a brief but brilliant venture.
The travelling troubadours laid out for the adoring audience how to take the doom out of doomsday. 'Tonic' is a comedic musical drama featuring the aforementioned siblings.
Set in 2047, when the apocalypse looms and the end is nigh, warring superpowers struggle to save humanity from ruin with in a frenetically paced show.
Written by, and featuring, musician, composer and actor Fionn Foley this is a remarkable piece of theatre.
Foley's whacky facial expressions, exaggerated body movements and exceedingly animated voice bring a cartoonish qualty to the drama. Of course it should, after all this is a slightly-pre-apocalypse musical drama.
Just because Foley wrote the show doesn't mean he stole it. Roseanna Purcell and Ruth Smith are not also rans, their characters are well drawn and exquisitely delivered.
Rough Magic's Tonic left the audience hankering for a few more drops of the miracle elixir Halcyon, a respite from the dreary days of the 2020s.
