A Tonic for the troops: Longford set for theatre magic

A Tonic for the troops: Longford set for theatre magic

Fionn Foley's Tonic is coming to Backstage Theatre for one night only

Ireland has a wealth of independent drama companies that have challenged what theatre is to create audience experiences that are richly rewarding. Our own Livin' Dred is a fine example, but they are but one of a number dotted across the island.

Dublin's Rough Magic have been smashing moulds for quite a while. Since its foundation in 1984, Rough Magic has produced over 135 shows, including 39 Irish premieres and 30 World premieres. It is recognised both as independent creative entity and a valued institution.

There latest is 'Tonic', presented by Fionn Foley in association with Solstice Arts Centre and Kilkenny Arts Festival.

Set in 2047, when the apocalypse looms and the end is nigh, warring superpowers struggle to save humanity from ruin.

That is, until a miracle elixir is discovered – Halcyon – which promises to restore the mind and body to the glory days of the 2020s.

The Vultura Corporation, which obviously has everyone's best interest at heart, have this wonder tonic that can transport you back to the utopia of 2021.

Charged with spreading this good news, the amazing Calibri Triplet Family Band embark on their most challenging touring schedule to date. Using only their charm, their music and their notoriety, they will show their adoring audiences how to take the doom out of doomsday.
The show has a loose narrative of sibling rivalry to draws in the audience, but the use of music as a storytelling tool is part of its unique charm.

The show opened in Dublin Theatre Festival last year. It had audiences and critics alike in agreement that it lives up to its name as "a pure Tonic” that will leave you with a big smile on your face.
Award-winning playwright Fionn Foley's show is a blistering new comic musical for the times we live in.

It is directed by Ronan Phelan, with the cast comprising of Fionn Foley, Roseanna Purcell and Ruth Smith.

It comes to Backstage Theatre for one night only, on Thursday, April 13.
