A new signalised pedestrian crossing may be on the cusp of being introduced at one of Longford town's most dangerous junctions.

Longford County Council transport officials will seek funding to install the crossing at the county town's New Street junction should road desgin officials back the move, a meeting heard last week.
That came after Cllr Uruemu Adejinmi raised the topic at the March meeting of Longford Municipal District.

“At the moment there is a pedestrian crossing from one side of New Street to the other and a health safety issue has been raised by residents,” she said.

“I think with the regeneration works completed along the Market Square it’s needed for that additional level to make pedestrians safer when crossing the road.

“It is a busy junction with cars going either side of the road and links onto the N63.”

Executive engineer Brian Faughnan said the matter, following referral and approval by the council's road design section, would likely proceed towards a funding submission to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
