Longford Chamber of Commerce has welcomed renewed discussion regarding the long-term structure and planning of the town’s St Patrick’s Day parade, describing the event as a vital part of Longford’s cultural calendar and an important driver of town-centre activity.

The Chamber wishes to clarify that its decision to step back from organising the 2025 parade was communicated publicly at a meeting in October 2024, following detailed consideration of the operational and financial demands involved in delivering an event of this scale.

“Organising a parade of this size requires substantial volunteer time, clear governance structures, confirmed funding and coordinated logistical support,” said Fulton Grant, President of Longford Chamber of Commerce. “While the Chamber was proud to lead the event in previous years, it became clear that without sustainable and guaranteed resources in place, it would not be responsible to continue in that capacity.”

The Chamber acknowledged the efforts of Longford County Council staff and others who ensured the 2025 parade proceeded.

Looking ahead, the Chamber believes that any future model for parade organisation must be based on early planning, defined roles and transparent budgets from the Longford Municipal District.

“The scale and ambition of Longford St Patrick’s Day parade deserve a structure that matches it,” Mr Grant added. “With appropriate resourcing and shared commitment, the parade can continue to grow as a flagship event for the town, benefiting residents, visitors and local enterprises alike.”

The Chamber is willing to consider leading the organisation of the parade from 2027 onwards, subject to confirmed funding streams and clear operational frameworks.
