Gardaí from Longford Community Policing are giving talks in national schools throughout the county in a bid to help kids become more aware of the potential dangers around fireworks and bonfires this Halloween.
With the noise of unauthorised fireworks being an infrequent occurrence around Longford town in recent weeks, there is the concern that such haphazard use may result in a serious injury or worse.
It is hoped that direct engagement in the classroom, particularly with regard to the dangers of fireworks, will in turn help kids stay safe during the seasonal festivities.
The classroom talks being carried out by Longford Gardaí come just two weeks after Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan announced a nationwide awareness campaign to warn against the serious risks posed by illegal fireworks.
The campaign, which was launched in collaboration with An Garda Síochána, also highlighted the strict legal consequences involved.
Anyone who receives a conviction of throwing an ignited firework at a person or property, or of having fireworks in their possession with intent to sell or supply, will face fines of up to €10,000 and 5-years’ imprisonment.
