Fr. Tom Flynn RIP
The death of Fr. Tom Flynn C.C. Granard and former P.P. Killoe occurred on Tuesday, 4 November at Mullingar Hospital following a long illness. Fr. Tom’s body reposed at Our Lady’s Manor, Edgeworthstown on Sunday evening followed by removal to St. Mary’s Church, Granard. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday morning followed by burial afterwards in his native place of Gortletteragh. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his brother Jude, sister Peggy, nephews, nieces, relatives, friends and neighbours, his fellow priests of the Diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise, Bishop Francis Dufffy and former Bishop Colm O’Reilly.
Prayers for the faithful departed will take place in Granardkille Old Cemetery on this Sunday, 16 November at 12.30pm and in the New Cemetery at 1.30pm. All are welcome.
The annual Novena to our Blessed Lady continues each Wednesday evening at 7.30pm in St. Mary’s Church, Granard until Wednesday, 17 December. This is a time of reflection petition praise and thanksgiving. Everyone welcome to take part.
Bishop Frances Duffy will celebrate the 8.30pm Mass in St. Mary’s Church Granard on this Saturday, 15 November. This is a Mass of thanksgiving to God for the consecrated life. All are invited to the Community Centre for refreshments and celebration afterwards.
The Longford Branch of Arthritis Ireland invites you to an information evening on Tuesday, 18 November at The Family Centre, Longford. Guest Speaker will be well known Podriatrist, Patrick Durkin. Free consultation from 7pm with “Step Forward Ireland”. A.G.M will be held on the night.
On Sunday evening of the Bank Holiday weekend last the John Dungan branch held our National annual Trad for Trocaire session in McElvaney’s Lounge, Coolarty . A great evening was had by all. We would like to thank all who attended and made a contribution in any way. We would also like to say a special word of thanks to the McElvaney family who served beautiful refreshments on the night. A small presentation was made by the branch to Elaine Reilly from Ballymore on her success at the All Ireland Fleadh.
Membership is being taken at the moment for the year ahead. Families €20.00. Single Senior €12.00 and Junior is €6.00. Membership covers insurance and reduced entries to competitions at the Fleadh. More details can be had on facebook or on the Comhaltas website.
Granard Area Action Group Ltd. are holding their annual Table Quiz in Fay’s Bar on Friday, 21 November at 9pm. This is well established event and always an enjoyable night. Granard Area Action Group are sponsors of the local Community Employment Project that takes in the parishes of Abbeylara Granard and Mullinalaghta and this yearly fundraiser helps to defray costs of sponsoring the project. As this is the only public fundraiser held during the year the group greatly appreciate the support of all local community groups and sub-sponsors.
Johnny and Fiona Macken would like to thank everyone for their sponsorship and donations for the recent Breffni Challenge 2014. The amount raised was €6,450 which has been presented to the Breffni Challenge. All the money raised goes to the Friends of St. Luke’s National Breast Cancer Research Institute and Cavan HomeCare.
Visitor Centre Project

Would you like to display or sell your Christmas Wares this festive Season? If so then come along to the Granard Christmas Market which takes place on Main Street on Sunday, 7 December from 2pm to 5pm. Exhibitors are required to set up their own stall with Outdoor Canopy and Own Insurance Cover. There will be a Unique Live Crib, the Christmas lights will be switched on and Santa will also arrive on the day. This promises to be a great festive family day out in the town so why not come along and enjoy the fun!
Granard I.C.A. guild will host the Federation meeting and Cookery Cup competition on 20 November in the Community Centre, Granard. At our recent monthly meeting all arrangements were finalised and we look forward to a successful gathering of all the guilds from throughout the county.
Bingo continues each Wednesday evening at 8.45pm in the Community Centre, Granard. Jackpot this week is €18,100. Proceeds go to St. Mary’s G.A.A. and Abbeylara GFC. Your continued support is much appreciated.
Rath Mhuire Men’s Club
Our next meeting date is this Thursday, 11 November in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre where we will be doing some creel and basket making. New members are very welcome.
We will be meeting on Monday, 17 November at 3pm in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre, new members are always made very welcome.
Local Historical/Heritage Group
The inaugural meeting of the group took place last month and there was great interest and enthusiasm in getting the group established. Our next meeting will take place on this Thursday, 13 November at 7.30pm in the O’Carolan Room at Rath Mhuire Resource Centre. Fr. Tom Murray from Longford Historical Society will be coming to speak to us on the night.
All groups and activities are well under way at the Dolmen Centre in Aughnacliffe (Dolmen Failte Active Age Group – Dolmen Day Care Services – North Longford Men’s Group). For any information on any of the activities at the Dolmen Centre or Rath Mhuire Centre contact Jackie or Lucy at 043-6686309. Transport is available for anyone wishing to attend any of the activities at either Rath Mhuire Centre or Dolmen Centre.

Our opening hours at the Siopa are Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10am to 5pm.
