An important Public Meeting of Granard Town Towns will take place on Tuesday 24 September at 8.30pm in Lus na Greine Main Street Granard. This meeting is to discuss the future of Granard Tidy Towns. If you are interested in keeping this organisation going please attend.

The Garda Band

The band of An Garda Siochana are in Concert at Canon Kelly Hall Ard Scoil Phadraig Granard on Tuesday 24 September 2013 at 3.00pm. The concert if free of charge and all are welcome. Adult Learning Centre

Do you need help with reading writing spelling maths or computers? If you do then please call into the Centre at Main Street Granard or phone 043-6686211. We offer part-time day and evening courses. We are now taking names for new classes starting this month. The service is free and confidential. Contact Therese Smith-Callaghan at the centre. All courses are funded by the new Longford Westmeath Education and Training Board (ETB) and the Department of Education and Skills.

Citizens Information

An information officer from Co. Longford Citizen’s Information Service will be in attendance at Granard Area Action Information Office Main Street every Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm.


The John Dungan branch of CCE had their annual Trad for Trocaire session in Creegan’s of Bunlahy on Saturday night last. A big thank you to all the musicians, singers and dancers and everyone who came to support us. Also thanks to John Pettit, Dunphy’s Supervalu, McEvoy’s Chemist and the Gift Shop who donated items for the raffle. Thanks to Johnny Creegan and staff for the wonderful venue.

Volunteer Award

Congratulations to Rose Egan Kenagh (nee Hourican and Granard native) who received the Woman’s Way volunteer award for the month of August. Rose was nominated for all her work visiting the sick and hospitalised in and around her area. Continued good wishes Rose for many more years of volunteering.


The Library has relocated to Rath Mhuire Resource Centre at the Community Centre Barrack Street Granard and is open for business as usual.


A fundraising night will take place in the Boomerang Bar Granard on Saturday 28 September in association with Breffni Challenge to raise much needed funds for St. Luke’s Hospital; Cavan Oncology Unit and Breast Cancer Research. This is a follow up to the cycle that Johnny and Fiona Macken participated in during August. Chuck and June will entertain and there will be valuable raffle prizes and food.

St. Mary’s Glotto

In the recent draw the following numbers were drawn 2; 9; 25 and 29 . There was no outright winner. Congratulations to the following winners of €30 each Pamela Walsh New York. Tommy Brennan Rathcronan and Seamus Flynn Cartron. Next draw is €5900. Stay in to win.

Give Blood

The service will hold clinics in St. Brigid’s Community Centre Loch Gowna on Monday 23 September 2013 and Thursday 24 September from 5.00pm to 8.30pm. Please note days and clinic opening times. Please help to ensure essential blood supplies are always available by giving blood regularly.

Moatsiders Active Age

The first meeting for the new season will take place on this Thursday 19 September at Rath Mhuire Centre at 2.30pm and we are looking forward to getting together again. We would like to remind anybody who hasn’t returned their sponsorship cards to bring them on the day. We would also remind anyone who is interested in the September outing to let Jackie know before the meeting if possible so that we can be organised on our meeting day.

Local History Society

There has been a great interest expressed from many people that use the Centre in local history and stories and suggestions of starting a local history group or society. If you are interested please let us know as this seems a really good idea for a community steeped in history. Temple Street Hospital

A Fundraising night and draw in aid of Temple Street Children’s University Hospital will take place on 28 September in Crawford Lounge Abbeylara. Entertainment on the night by Mary O’Connor. Lines for the draw are available locally at €3 each of 2 for €5 for many valuable and unique prizes. Your support for this very worthy cause will be appreciated.

Gun Club

Congratulations to the 32 members and friends who travelled to Croke Patrick on Saturday 14 September. Well done to everyone to achieved the task.

Irish Heart Foundation

The foundation would like to thank all who contributed so generously to our recent Church Gate collection in Granard and to the collectors who gave freely of their time. A total of €595 was collected. Your continued support is much appreciated.


Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre Granard at 8.45pm. This week’s Jackpot is €12,200. Sincere thanks to all who support this fundraising activity. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and St. Mary’s G.F.C.

Granard Gun Club.

Walking Club

The Healthy Hearts walking club in Granard had a good turn out last Thursday evening for a most enjoyable walk. As the evenings are getting dark we have now changed out day and time for walks. We will meet at Higginstown on Saturday mornings at 9.00am. Walks usually last 1 hour to 1.5 hours. Next walk Saturday 21 September. New members always welcome – just come along and join in the fun.

Racing in Co. Cavan

The first ever race meeting in Co. Cavan will take place in Castlerahan on 15 September. Castlerahan Community Development are hosting Horse and Pony Racing at lands near Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan on Sunday 15 September. The Horse and Pony Racing is under the auspices of the Midland Horse and Pony Racing Association. The first local race commences at 12.30pm with the major races commencing at 1.30pm. For further details contact Mick Grenham 086 -101 7288.

15km Challenge

The 10th annual Gallant 15km Challenge in aid of St Christopher’s Hospice Cavan takes place Saturday 26 October 2013. Main sponsor is MacManus Pharmacies Cavan. People can either walk, run or cycle the 15km from Cavan to Cornafean or choose the smaller course of Ballinagh to Cornafean. Over the previous nine years the Challenge has been an outstanding success raising 262,000 euro for this wonderful cause.

Recent Deaths

The untimely death of Margaret Sheridan 2 Barrack Street Granard occurred at her residence on Thursday last 12 September following an illness bravely borne. Removal took place from her late residence to St. Mary’s Church Granard on Saturday evening. Burial took place in Granardkille Cemetery following 11.30 Mass on Sunday. May she rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to her husband daughters and son grandchildren brothers sisters and all the extended family circle. The death of Jack Leahy Liscarton Navan and formerly of Ballymaurice Granard occurred at his residence on 12 September following a long illness. Sympathy is extended to his wife Martha (nee Smyth) sons daughter grandchildren and all the family circle. May he rest in peace.
