I.C.A: A meeting of Granard Guild of I.C.A. will take place on this Thursday night 2 May at 8.00pm in the Credit Union meeting room. All members are requested to attend and new ones are very welcome. A guest speaker will attend on the night. Hostesses for the supper are Bridie McMahon and Kathleen Blake.

WELL DONE: Congratulations to Patty Fitzgerald who won Produce Competition with her Ginger Cake and Bridie McMahon won the Craft Competition with her Decoupage at the recent Federation meeting in Ballinalee; Congratulations to Suzanne Dooner Killashee who put on a brilliant performance in the Longford heat of the Rose of Tralee on Saturday night. Suzanne was sponsored by Longford ICA but unfortunately was not lucky enough to win. Katelyn Quinn and Helen Carrigy also performed brilliantly and both their mothers are members of ICA. However there can only be one winner and Longford ICA would like to congratulate Aisling Farrell Ballymahon on being crowned Longford Rose for 2013.

GRANARD PERSON OF THE YEAR 2012: The deferred presentation to Carmel Fay who was selected as Granard Person of the Year 2012 will now take place on this Friday 3 May at 9.00pm in Fay’s Bar. Everyone welcome. Congratulations to Carmel and it is great to see her out and about again after her prolonged illness. Carmel is a well known business person and community activist in Granard town. The award is given each year by Granard Town Council to people who have worked tirelessly for the good of the town. Carmel’s most recent exploit was as Chairperson of the very successful St. Patrick’s Festival 2012 and Easter Parade this year in Granard. These were the first ever Festivals of their kind held in the town and they were a resounding success. When Carmel herself was a member of the Town Council she always worked for the good of Granard town and area. Carmel is involved in many groups including St. Mary’s G.A.A. is sponsor and organiser of the very successful annual Co. Longford GAA Race Day held at Punchestown Racecourse each Spring. Carmel is a director of Granard Area Action Group Ltd. who sponsor the local Community Employment Project that employs 35 people in the parishes of Granard Abbeylara and Mullinalaghta. Carmel worked tirelessly with all groups she is associated with and always comes up trumps with her ideas. We wish Carmel and her husband Paul and family many more happy and healthy years with all her exploits in both business and community projects.

CLASS OF ‘86: This Saturday 4 May is a very special evening for the Leaving Cert Class of 1986 who completed their second level schooling at Cnoc Mhuire Granard that year. There will be in excess of 100 former students in town on Saturday who will be given a tour of their old Alma Mater by the principal of the school Ms Moira Mahon. A plaque in memory of former teacher the late Ms Mary Flynn will be donated by the former pupils. This will be followed by refreshments and entertainment in Paul and Carmel Fay’s place. GREVILLE ARMS: Our next outing is the eagerly awaited Tom Walsh Memorial Cup which this takes place on Saturday next 4 May. Tee off at 10.30am sharp in Longford Golf Club. This year we are challenging Hit and Miss Golf Society, Colmcille of which Tom’s brother Michael is a member. New members and visitors very welcome. Our Captain Brendan Kiernan started Greville Arms Golf Society 2013 with a little bit of history as it was our first time out on a Sunday. A good turnout of 17 braved the artic cold but dry conditions in Esker hills for our Spring Trophy. Esker Hill is home of Irish Amateur Open Champion 2009 Shane Lowry. Two lucky Greville Golfers secured his air-conditioned buggy for the day! Leo Fagan, 2012 Golfer of the Year started where he left off, winning the first outing of the year on a count back from Captain Brendan. First: Leo Fagan. COOLAMBER ICA GUILD: The guild will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday 7 May at 8.00pm in Streete Parish Centre. All members are requested to attend and new members are always welcome.

TABLE QUIZ: A table quiz will be held on Friday 10 May in Fay’s Bar. All proceeds to Granard Childcare Facility Childcare The Hill Granard. Start time 9.00pm. Please support your local crèche on this night. A Big Thank You to Cummins Hardware Granard and Quinn’s Supply Store Edgeworthstown for donating shelving for the facility. This was much appreciated.

ST CHRISTOPHER’S: The Granard Branch of St Christopher’s would like to thank all the walkers and those who donated Easter eggs in support of the Easter Bunny Walk from Granard to Abbeylara especially on such a bitterly cold day. Thanks also to St Bernard’s school Abbeylara who provided the venue and to the ladies who provided the welcome refreshments. The final figure raised was €1,460.

ANNUAL CYCLE: A special event to launch the annual cycle to Croagh Patirick will take place on this Saturday 4 May starting at 9am morning with a Static Cycle “1500km from Granard to Lourdes” followed by a Fancy Dress Party in John V. Granard MOTTE COMMUNITY ENTERPRISE: Our next public meeting takes place on Tuesday next 7 May at 8pm in the Community Centre Barrack St. Granard. This is a very important meeting as Mr Bill Thorne of Exodea Consultants will present a draft copy of our Feasibility Study to the meeting. The study is due for completion by the end of May so now is the time to give your opinion. Everyone is invited to come along and hear what is being proposed and give their comments. Our monthly draw for April will also be held at the meeting.

RATH MHUIRE & DOLMEN SERVICES MOATSIDERS ACTIVE AGE: It was with great sadness that we heard of the passing of one our most loyal members, Anne Byrne. Anne was a member of our group since the beginning which is ten years ago this year. Anne rarely missed a meeting or activity and we all admired her great courage determination and humour which she displayed in abundance no matter what the occasion. She will be missed by all of us and we convey our deepest sympathy to all her family. RIP. Our next meeting will take place on Thursday 2 May at Rath Mhuire Resource Centre at 2.30. Community Physio -Margaret will attend. We would like to remind everybody re our 10th anniversary celebrations which will take place on Wednesday 15 May at 2 pm in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre. RECENT DEATHS: The death of Anne Byrne Barrack Street Granard occurred peacefully at her residence following an illness bravely borne. Removal took place to St. Mary’s Church Granard on Thursday morning for funeral Mass. Burial took place in her native Drumshambo Co. Leitrim. Predeceased by her husband Tommy she is survived by her son and two daughters grandchildren and extended family. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
