The next meeting of Granard I.C.A. takes place on this Thursday, 1st October at 8pm in Granard Credit Union Seminar Room. “Steegan Cup” Competition – write a short story in 6 words. Please bring your entry on a postcard. Guest speaker on the night will be Noreen McLoughlin from Longford Co. Co. who will speak on the very topical issue of the Japanese Knotweed. Everyone welcome to come along and hear of the details of this most invasive plant.

Check it Fits

The Road Safety Authority’s Check it Fits Service will be visiting SuperValu car park Granard on Friday 2 October from 10.00am to 5.30pm. The service is quick and easy and gives free expert advice to parents / guardians on how to fit their child’s car seat safely and securely.

Co. Final Day

Best wishes to our neighbours Abbeylara, both players and management who play Emmet Og Killoe on Sunday, 4 October in Pearse Park in the Peter Hanley sponsored Senior Final. Throw in is at 4.00pm. Derek Fahy is referee for the big occasion.

Table Quiz

In preparation for the Minor Co. Final on 11 October, Northern Gaels GFC are holding a Table Quiz on this Friday night, 2nd October in Keogh’s Bar, Mullinalaghta at 9.00pm. Proceeds to Northern Gales Minor team. €40 per table of 4. Raffle for Spot Prizes. Your support will be appreciated.

St. Christopher’s

The Granard Branch wishes to thank everybody who supported their recent raffle for the “One Direction” tickets and the function in John V’s where the raffle was drawn. The lucky winner was Catherine McGerr, Kilfintan, Granard. Altogether a total of €1,505.00 was raised. A big thank you to everybody who bought raffle tickets and to all who donated prizes for the raffle. Thank you to Sean Donohue and staff for hosting the event; to SuperValu for allowing us to sell tickets on the premises and to Seamus Farrell for supplying the music on the night. Your kind generosity is, as always, much appreciated.

Greville Golf Society

The Greville Arms Golf Society recently held there second last outing in Kilcock Golf Club. The weather was good and the course was in good nick. Team prize - Leon Fagan, Ned Slattery, Joe McElvaney. Category B winner - Sean Flood. Nearest to the pin and longest drive - Colm Fagan. 2nd Overall - Leon Fagan. 1st Overall - Eugene Lynch. The weekend away for the Society is on Friday and Saturday the 2nd and 3rd October with 2 days golf at the Arklow Bay Hotel. Hope to see all there. 

Solemn Novena to Our Lady

The annual Novena commences on Wednesday, 28 October at 7.30pm in St. Mary’s Church, Granard and continues for 9 Wednesday nights. Everyone is invited and encouraged to take part.


Bingo continues each Wednesday night at the Community Centre, Granard commencing at 8.45pm. Jackpot now stands at €20,000 in 42 calls or less. The second Jackpot is €2,700. Your continued support is appreciated. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and St. Mary’s G.A.A. Clubs.

Monster Bingo

A date for your diary – Granard Motte Enterprise Centre are having a Monster Bingo on Sunday 18 October at 3.00pm in the Community Centre Granard. Your support will be appreciated.

Siopa Lus na Greine

Our Siopa is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10am – 5pm. Thank you for your continued support. We welcome your cast offs, bric –a – brac etc. these can be dropped into An Siopa. All proceeds from An Siopa go directly to the Centre to fund projects in the Community.

Talent Contest

Congratulations to local group ‘Se Chairde’ on winning first prize at the Granard Credit Union Talent Contest on Saturday last - Mikey Doyle, Grace Ross, Mary Sheridan, Ciaran Mulligan, Lorna Beer and Laura Packenham will now represent Granard Credit Union at the Regional final in Ballinasloe in October. Best of luck to all.

Student Bursary forms now available at counter. Next members draw will be in December when there will be a lot of cash prizes on offer. To be in with a chance to enter in this draw Members need to ensure accounts are up to date with a minimum of €50 in savings. Rath Mhuire & Dolmen Resource Services

Would like to sincerely thank all those who kindly donated to our Church Gate Collection, at Abbeylara, Carragh, Colmcille, Mullinalaghta and Purth. All proceeds will be used in the provision of services at Rath Mhuire Centre and the Dolmen Centre.

Hospice Morning

Mary McInerney and Friends hosted their annual Hospice Coffee Morning at Rath Mhuire Centre last week and would also like to thank everyone for their generous donations.

Rath Mhuire Men’s Social Club

The Club met on Tuesday 29 September in Rath Mhuire Centre at 12.30pm. and had a most interesting afternoon. New members are very welcome, good company and good food will also be provided!

The St. Vincent de Paul Shop Main Street Granard opens each Monday morning from 10.00am to 1.00pm. Every Friday 10.00am to 5.00pm and Saturday from 11.00am to 5.00pm as well as the first Tuesday of each month. Come along and bag a bargain while supporting a very worthy local cause.

St. Mary’s Church Granard is the venue for Garda Siochana Male Choir on 15 November at 5pm. Proceeds to St. Vincent de Paul Granard. More details later.

Clothing collection

Please support the used clothing collection to aid Fr. Nicholas Maanzo and his parish of St. Patrick’s ‘ Kitui Kenya. Collection will be on Thursday 1st October at Abbeylara Church and St. Mary’s Carragh between 9 and 12 noon


The untimely and sudden death of Pat Connell, Rinroe, Granard occurred at his residence on Friday, 18 September. His body reposed at Smith’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, 22 September followed by removal to St. Mary’s Church, Granard. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday followed by burial in Granardkille old cemetery. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to brothers Mattie; Tommy; Christo; Kevin; Noel and Francis. His nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law; cousins; relatives and many friends.


Is extended to Monika Larenz, Abbey Craft Shop, Main Street, Granard and Derragh on the death of her mother, Elizabeth Henneken in Germany on 21 September. May she rest in peace.
