Members going to the Federation meeting hosted by Newtownforbes guild in the Rugby Club Longford on this Wednesday, 22 April are reminded to meet at the Community Centre at 6.30pm. Following the recent AGM of the guild the following officers were elected President Liz Brady. At the first committee meeting of the year with the new president the following are in office for the 15/16 season are Vice President: Joy Burns; Secretary and PRO: Maura Sheridan; Assistant Secretary and Contests Secretary: Frances Monahan; Treasurer: Ann Columb; Assistant Treasurer and Crafts Promotor: Bridie McMahon. Timire and Teachta: Ann Donohoe; International Officer: Doris Looker. Plans are in progress for Summer Outing and other activities for the coming year.

Country Markets Move

Granard Country Markets wish to announce to all their customers and friends that from this Friday 24 April the market will be held in THE MOTTE Enterprise Centre building opposite Kearney’s Garage on the Dublin Road. All the usual bread, cakes, country fresh eggs, crafts and firewood will be available each Friday morning from 8.30am to 11.00am and there will be plenty of good parking and also free delivery to all town customers. The organizers and suppliers of the market really look forward to seeing all their regular customers and meeting new ones and will greatly appreciate all support.

Special Olympics

This Friday for first time volunteers will be collecting in Granard. Special Olympics is a sports training and competition programme for children and adults with an intellectual disability. Funds raised go directly towards developing the programme and ensuring that our athletes in Connaught, Longford and Westmeath receive the best training possible. This summer 88 athletes will compete at the special world games in Los Angeles. If you would like to be a volunteer on the day please contact Elizabeth on 086 1066087.

Tidy Towns

Granard Tidy Towns are holding their annual general meeting on this Friday, 24 April at 8pm in the Seminar Room of Granard Credit Union. All interested are very welcome.

Tractor Run

Moatefarrel Vintage Club will host a Tractor Run in aid of Motor Neurone Disease on Sunday next, April 26 with registration at Rawle’s Pub in Ballinalee starting at 10am. A special feature on the day will be the attendance of Harry’s Heroes who are the All Ireland Tractor Rebuilding Champions and they will give a demonstration at Rawle’s Pub between 4-00 and 4-30pm and this is something not to be missed. Fire Service

Best wishes to Paschal Masterson who retired after 20 years service in the local fire station. A function was held in the Pollard Arms Hotel, Castlepollard on Saturday night last. A presentation was made to Paschal by Senior Assistant Fire Officer, Thomas Mooney, Longford. All the crew in Granard wish Paschal many happy and healthy years retirement.

Greville Golf Society

The Greville Golf Society recently held their first golf outing in the Slieve Russell golf club. The weather on the day was windy with a few showers making golfing conditions very difficult. 16 players played on the day the results are as follows. Longest drive - Ned Monaghan. The team prize went to the team of Martin Murray, John O’Hara, Eugene Lynch, and Colm Fagan. Category B winner - John O’Hara - 26 pts. Second overall - Bernard McElvaney - 30 pts. 1st overall - Kevin Tighe - 32 pts. A good day was had by all.


The annual Cystic Fibrosis collection will be taken up at all Masses in Granard this weekend April 25 and 26 and your generosity will be greatly appreciated.

Garden Club

Granard Garden club will hold their monthly meeting on Monday next, April 27 at 8pm in Lus na Greine and the guest speaker will be Pauric Kelly from Abbeylara Garden Centre. All are welcome.

Longford GAA

Congratulations to Longford Minors and their mentors who defeated Wicklow by 1-14 to 1-8 in Blessington on Saturday last. All roads lead to Croke Park on this Saturday evening, 25 April for the Division 4 final between Longford and Offaly. Throw in time 5.15pm. We wish the team and their mentors all the best and hope they bring home the trophy.

Social evening

Gowna Church of Ireland invite you to join them for a Social evening of music, song and dance on Saturday 2 May from 9:00pm until late in Gowna Community Centre. Music by Mark Gregory Country and Friends. Supper will be served. Raffle on the night. Subscription Voluntary. All are welcome to attend.

A word of thanks

Niamh Mulligan and Michelle Farrell would just like to extend their appreciation to everyone who turned up to participate in their Table Quiz which was held in Farrell’s Bar, Ballinalee last Saturday night which was a very successful night. The girls will be volunteering with the Global Medical and Public Health Brigade this coming June in Honduras and will be continuing their fundraising efforts in the coming weeks with another night planned for 9 May in Creegan’s, Bunlahy.

AG Bingo

Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre, Barrack Street, Granard commencing at 8.45pm. The Jackpot is now €20,000 in 42 calls or less. Your continued support is appreciated. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and St. Mary’s G.A.A. Clubs.

Abbeylara GAA

The club will host a fundraising table quiz in the Duke Pub in Dublin (just off Grafton St.) on this Thursday, 23 April starting at 8.30pm. €40 a table / 4 people per table. All are invited for what promises to be a great night.

Abbeylara Drama Group

The group are holding a 5K Walk/Fun Run/ Cycle in aid of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund on Monday 4 May at 2.00pm. Registration from 12.30pm in Crawford’s Lounge Abbeylara. Entry fee €10 per person or €20 per family. Your support would be greatly appreciated. Members of the Done and Dusted cast will lead the walk in full costume. Entertainment in Crawford’s afterwards.

Co. Longford Tourism

The group held their AGM in Granard Library on Tuesday 14 April last. Michael Carrigy was re-elected as Chairperson. Vice Chairperson: Michael Nevin. Secretary: Anna Delaney. Joint Treasurers: Jude Flynn and Frances McPartland. PRO: Seadna Ryan. There are very positive plans for the county in the coming years especially with the Center Parcs Development in Ballymahon and the Granard Motte Enterprise Centre here in town. A presentation was made to Jude Flynn, long time serving member of Longford Tourism by the Chairperson in recognition of his dedication to promoting Co. Longford for over the years.

Agricultural Show

The committee are hosting a major fundraising night at Longford Greyhound Track on Friday, 15 May next. First Race starting at 8p.m. Tickets are priced at €10 and will be available from any committee member and also at various locations around the town. Raffle on the night with some excellent prizes, more details to follow. This is expected to be a big social gathering of all members and supporters of Granard Agri-Show and promises to be a great night with a few surprises in store, so why not come along and join in the fun.


The death of Brian Drake, Harrow Middlesex, England, Ballinacross, Granard and formerly of Ballinulty, Dring occurred on 6 April. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on this Thursda,y 23 April at 12 noon in St. Mary’s Church, Granard followed by burial in Granardkille, Granard. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended his wife Bernadette, daughters Emma and Brenna; sisters Margaret Corcoran, Newtownforbes; Helen Brady, Loughduff and Ann Shanley, Longford, brothers Padraig, London and Noel, Ballinulty, nieces, nephews, in-laws, relatives and many friends.

Local Historical Society

The group met on last Thursday and had a very interesting talk by Mairead Ni Chonghaile, Heritage Officer with Longford Co. Council when she talked on the stained glass windows in St. Mary’s Church. The monthly meeting followed afterwards in the O’Carolan Room.
