Lough Derg Pilgrimage

Took place on Saturday, 20 September where 30 people travelled by bus from Abbeylara Parish and surrounding areas for this one day Pilgrimage and enjoyed the prayerfulness and peace of the island. Your intentions were all included in the prayers and Holy Mass of the Pilgrimage. A word of sincere thanks to all the people who took part in the Lough Derg Pilgrimage.

AED/Debrillator & CPR Training

AED/Debrillator & CPR Training will take place on Saturday, 27 September in Abbeylara National School at 10.00am. Please contact 087 7634413. Abbeylara AED‘s are registered with the National Ambulance Service Ambulance Control Centre since 2013. In the event of a cardiac arrest in an area 2KM of the defibrillator the caller can now be advised of its location. AED’s are on exterior walls located at Bridie Kiernan’s, Dalystown, Carra Church, Pat McHugh’s Precast Springtown, Frank Malones, Ballywillian, Abbeylara N.S, Dressing room wall GAA Grounds, and Peter Reilly, Renehan. A representative from the National Ambulance Service Ambulance Control Centre will attend.

Parish Pastoral Council

Bishop Francis Duffy will meet with our Parish Pastoral Council on Wednesday, 24 September in the Handball Sports Complex, Abbeylara at 8.00pm. A full attendance of all members is requested. Refreshments served afterwards.

BBQ and Family Fun Day

Takes place on Sunday, 28 September. Your help is needed for this event. It is hoped that the 1994 Abbeylara team who won the Abbeylara Intermediate Football Championship in Longford that year, will play the present team. Events will start at 1.30pm. Music Lessons Enrolment

Active Retirement

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, 25 September at 11.00am in the Sports Centre.  We hope to have a big crowd after the summer holidays and to hear all the stories of the happenings of our members during the summer.  We always welcome new members, so looking forward to seeing new faces. You don’t have to join, just come along and see for yourself.  This is a great way to get out of the house and break the monotony of looking out the window to see if there’s anyone going to call. 

The Draft Register of Electors

The Draft Register of Electors 2015/2016 is now being prepared. If you live in County Longford and wish to vote you should check that you are registered correctly to vote. If you have any family member resident in County Longford who will be 18 years or over by the 15 February 2015 they may also be registered to vote. You can check by logging onto or by contacting Longford County Council at if you have any queries to the Register of Electors.

Fun Run

A 3k or 6k (your choice) run/walk will take place in Lisryan Village on Sunday, 28 September at 11.00am. Registration will take place from 10.00am and the race will start at 11.00am. All proceeds will go towards Lisryan Community Development Fund. The 3k/6k will finish with a well-deserved cup of tea in the heart of our village “The Crossroads Inn”. Registration on the day is €5 per child and €10 per adult. There are many prizes up for grabs. All families are welcome.

Alzheimer Society of Ireland

The Longford Branch of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland would like to announce that our church gate collection would be held on Saturday, 27 and Sunday, 28 September throughout the County. The money raised will greatly contribute to our continued services in the area. These include a home care service, a respite service, a transport service and a day care facility. All of these services are dedicated to respecting the rights of people with Alzheimer’s disease, and supporting their carers. Please give generously.

Credit Union Factor

Granard Credit Union Launches Talent Contest CU Factor - Have you got the CU Factor, if yes you could be on your way to winning the top prize of €500 courtesy of Granard Credit Union. Ten to nineteen year olds in Granard area are being invited to share their talents as part of a new talent competition in the area organised by Granard Credit Union. The talent show is open to all dancers, singers, bands, jugglers, comedy acts etc. The closing date for applications is 25 September 2014. Auditions are scheduled to take place on Saturday 27 September and the local final will take place in Granard Community Centre on Saturday 4 October. The top two acts will go forward to represent Granard Credit Union in the regional final on Saturday the 18 October in Ballinasloe with a top prize of €1000. Application forms are available from the counter in Granard Credit Union.

St. Christopher’s Charity Night

The Granard Branch of St Christopher’s is holding a charity evening with The Merchant Archers at Creegan’s, Bunlahy, on Saturday, 4 October 2014. There will be a raffle and door prizes. Social Dancing
