Your prayers are requested for the happy repose of the souls of Cathal McWeeney, Teffia Park, Longford who died on Sunday, 16 February, Kathleen Biggins, Shrule, Co. Galway, who died on Monday, 17 February, Michael Tully, Rathcor, Granard, who died on Wednesday, 19 February, father of Jacinta McCormack, Cloonaghmore.  May they rest in peace.


Ash Wednesday this year is celebrated on Wednesday 5 March which marks the beginning of Lent. Trócaire Boxes will be distributed to each home in our parish soon. The focus on this year’s Trócaire Lenten campaign is on “water”.

Learn to Jive

Learn to jive with Eamonn Cunniss five times all Ireland champion, on Tuesday evenings in the Pikers Lodge, Gowna and on Sunday evenings in Farrell’s Lounge, Ballinalee from 8pm to 10pm. Just turn up on the night. Everyone is welcome, fee €10.

Pottery Classes

Lus Na Greine is now accepting names for a Pottery Class tutored by a fully qualified professional. Classes will take place subject to interest and will probably be on a Tuesday evening. Please book at the centre.

Eager Readers

A book club for those who love the pastime and want to discuss and learn among themselves starts in Lus Na Greine tomorrow, Thursday, 27 February between 12.30pm and 1.30pm. All is welcome.

5K Road Race/Fun Run

Castletown- Finea, Coole Whitehall GFC are holding a 5K Road Race and Fun Run on Sunday, 23 March at 12 noon. The event is AAI approved and fully insured and is a full road course. Times will be published on Facebook after the event. Prizes for many categories including Seniors, Juniors, Over 40’s, Over 50’s and U-12 National School Children. There will be special group for children walking the route, fully supervised with two stewards. Refreshments will be served in Fitzsimons Bar following the event. Entry fee is 10 euro for adults and 5 euro for children, and information may be had by going to “CFCW FiveRun” or “Castletown Finea Coole Whitehall GFC”on Facebook, or by contacting Derek Sheridan on 087 9714734, or Noel Delaney on 087 7589930.

Benefit Night

A Benefit night will take place on Saturday, 8 March in Creegan’s Bar, Bunlahy in aid of the Sammon family, Bunlahy, following a recent house fire. Admission is optional. Music by Chuck and June. Your support would be very much appreciated.

Agricultural Show

The annual general meeting of Granard Agricultural Show Society will take place in John V’s Lounge on Thursday 6 March at 9pm. All members are requested to attend. New members are very welcome.

Granard/ Abbeylara Bingo

Takes place every Wednesday night at 8.45pm in the Community Centre Granard. Proceeds go towards St. Mary’s Granard and Abbeylara GAA Clubs. Jackpot is now €14,400. Seats are limited with this big Jackpot so come along early. IT COULD BE YOU!!

Community Diary

A 2014 Diary is available at Granard Area Action Group office to enable local voluntary groups and fundraising events to log their forthcoming activities for the year so as to help co-ordinate events successfully and to avoid duplication where possible. Bereavement Course

A six week bereavement course for adults who have experienced the death of a relative or friend begins in the Family Centre Longford on Wednesday, March 5 at 8.00pm. This course will be presented by two trained, caring and experienced facilitators. Over the years many people have found this course very helpful. Active Retirement 

We are going on our 5 day trip to Kerry from 22 to 26 June, staying at the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney, 4 nights B/B and 4 evening meals plus free show in hotel every night.  Coach from Abbeylara to Kerry and back, including day trips around Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula. A fundraising Concert will take place on Wednesday, 9 April in Crover House Hotel, Mountnugent at 8.30 p.m. with Mick Flavin and his Band. Proceeds go towards the maintenance of Holy Trinity Abbey, Kilnacrott.

Volunteer Recognition Event

Rural Transport Programme

We would always welcome new passengers on board the services; it is open to ALL AGE GROUPS, with FTP holders travelling Free. Single Fare is €3 and Return is €5, for under 65 years. For our local region of Granard/Abbeylara, there are 2 Friday services into Granard = via Robinstown – Abbeylara – Creevy/Cloughernal and in the Afternoon = via Derragh – Killasonna – Lisryan to Granard. Our STOP and DEPARTURE Point is from the Granard Area Action Group Office on Main Street. The Rural Transport office is based in LCRL Longford, Phone 043 3345555.
