County final

County final

The town and district will be deserted on Sunday next October 13th as young and not so young will travel to Breffni Park for the senior county football championship final in which Ballinagh will play Cavan Gaels. For local club members and supporters it will be a memorable occasion as it will be our first time since 1986 to play in the senior championship final. Twenty seven years is a long time to wait and only two teams in the county can qualify for the final. This year the honour of being the senior county finalists has been won by Ballinagh and Cavan Gaels and for both clubs it is a significant honour and praise is due to both panels of players and to their mentors. Wishing both teams a day of enjoyment and hoping that by Sunday night Ballinagh will have cause to celebrate the winning of their first ever senior county championship. Good luck to our local team and their mentors.

Sympathy is extended to Miss Mary McCabe, Creighan, on the death of her mother Mrs Kathleen McCabe. For the family this is a particularly sad time as Kathleen’s husband – the late Mr Austin McCabe – passed away only a few months ago. May their gentle souls rest in the peace of heaven.

There were scenes of jubilation in the town following the victory of the Ballinagh football team over neighbours Crosserlough in the senior championship semi final, thus qualifying to play Cavan Gaels in the senior county championship final at Breffni Park on Sunday October 13. For Ballinagh it will be the first time in many years that the club will be involved in a senior championship final. Incidentally just one hundred years ago in 1913 Ballinagh won the first ever junior county football championship overcoming Cross in a thrilling final.

Ladies All Ireland

The victory of the Cavan ladies football team at Croke Park which saw the team win the All Ireland intermediate championship was hailed with delight through the town and surrounding areas with many members of the victorious team being natives of the district.
