CANDLEMAS: Next Saturday February 2nd will be the traditional Candlemas day when the candles in the Church will be blessed for use throughout the coming year. This is a very old ceremony going back over centuries.
Time was money was collected from parishioners to pay for the wax candles which would be used in the various ceremonies for the following year. Of course there was much more use made of candles in times past such as at Easter time, benediction , evening devotions and at high masses when six or eight candles would be used. Another very important feast day falls on Feb 1st when we celebrate the feast of Saint Brigid (La Feile Bridge). It was the first day of Spring when by tradition gardeners got busy putting in the first crops of vegetables. It was important that a ridge of onions would be planted on that day. Then February 3rd is the traditional feast of Saint Blaise when the congregation got their throats blessed by using a pair of candles crossed on the throat and then we have Ash Wednesday just around the corner bringing with pancake Tuesday and seven weeks of Penance. Times have changed since the good old days.
