COUNTRY MARKETS: Granard Country Markets is pitching its tent again at this year’s Longford Country Fair on Saturday, July 23. A Healthy Hamper of homemade produce is being raffled at the show in aid of St. Christopher’s Services, Longford. Tickets are €1 each and may be purchased at the Country Market on Friday, July 22 at the Market House Granard from 8:30am to 11am or at the Showgrounds on the day. Draw takes place at 5pm.

RESEARCH: Carol Martin is currently undertaking a Streetscape Project of the Town of Granard and would appreciate any photographs anyone could contribute. The focus is on Main Street and Barrack Street although any images would be welcomed. These will be scanned and returned as soon as possible with full acknowledgment in the publication. They can be dropped into Granard Library or to Carol at 6, Parnell Row, Granard.

CEMETERY SUNDAY: Mass will be celebrated in the New Cemetery, Granard at 12.30pm on Sunday, July 31 and in Granardkille Cemetery at 11.30am on Sunday, August 7. Cemetery Sunday in Abbeylara takes place at 11am on Sunday, July 31.

MUSIC SUMMER SCHOOL: Rath Mhuire Music Summer School will run from Monday, July 25 to July 29 at Rath Mhuire Centre, Granard from 10am-3pm each day. The school will be headed-up by Jackie Callaghan, Feis Ceoil All Ireland Champion (2010). Jackie will be joined by a number of tutors who are currently studying Music and Dance at University College Limerick as well as being fellow All Ireland champions. FLEADH CEOIL: Congratulations to all the competitors from the local area that represented Co. Longford in the Leinster Fleadh Ceoil in Portlaoise recently. Congratulations to Elaine Reilly, Ballymore and Rachael Masterson, Rincoola who secured gold medals. Elaine achieved 1st places in Banjo U-18 and Mandolin U-18. Rachael achieved 1st place in Piano U-18. Wishing both girls every success in the All-Ireland Fleadh in Cavan in August. Well done girls.

AG BINGO: Bingo takes place each Wednesday night at 9pm in the Community Centre, Granard. The Jackpot is now €8,900. Big crowds are attending each week and last week no fewer that five people checked for a full house. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and Granard GAA clubs. Your continued support is much appreciated.

BREFFNI CHALLENGE: Local man Johnny Macken is once again taking part in the Breffni Challenge and would appreciate your help with sponsoring him in this very worthy event. This year St. Luke’s Hospital Dublin; the National Breast Cancer Research Institute and Cavan Cancer Homecare Association will benefit from the sponsorships. Over the past number of years the Challenge has raised over €750K for cancer research. HORSE LEAGUE: Well done to Bart Nannery on winning the speed derby at Rincoola Future Event Horse League.

PITCH & PUTT: Competitions continue on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. On Sunday, July 3 last the Leinster Juvenile Strokeplay qualifiers were held at Higginstown. Qualifiers and the winners were Dillon Logan 10 – 13 years. Owen Higgins and Mark Tully 14 – 15 years. The final will be held in the Royal Meath Pitch and Putt Course Cloonee Co. Meath on Saturday, August 6 next. This was a great day for the club as it is the first time that the club had juveniles qualify for a National Competition. We wish the boys the best of luck in the final. On this Saturday, July 23 Thomas Kelly travels to play in the National Strokeplay finals in Douglas, Co Cork so best of luck to him also from all at the club. Green fees for non members can be paid into box at the entrance to the course. Adults €5 per day. Students and Senior citizens €2 per day.

LUS NA GREINE: Teenagers - Sculpture Music Photography and much more takes place from July 25-29 – 12 years and upwards. This week long event will follow the cookery school but will focus on artistic activities. Again there will be a professional artist and an opportunity to create a sculpture that will live on long after the week is over. The week will include two day trips to Zip Link in Boyle and Lilliput in Mullingar. Lus na Gréine will become a terrific creative teenage zone for the week. Booking and details from Lus na Gréine. Youth Café - Young people have told us they want a place to drop in to where they can enjoy music, games and have facilities to chill out. They also want some structured activities. So that’s what we will provide. We hope to launch the Café early Autumn with a live music session. In the meantime we are searching for a great name for the Café. CHILDREN OF CHERNOBYL: The Longford Branch of Children of Chernobyl is holding a Monster Auction in Kenagh Community Centre on Saturday, July 23 to raise funds to help the young children who have been affected by the aftermath of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear facility.
