Art Appreciation

Are you interested in the history of art and discovering some of the greatest paintings in the world then join renowned art critic and historian Ciaran MacGonigal for a series of talks in Granard Branch Library. The next lecture will take place on Thursday, 9 October at 7pm. Granard I.C.A. guild in association with Granard Community Library are hosting the course with Mr. MacGonigal Art Critic. Local History/Heritage Group

We have had great interest in the establishment of this group, which we had hoped to start earlier in the year but due to various circumstances we were unable to do so, but we are delighted to say that the group will be starting in October and we will be finalising times and dates in the next couple of weeks. Dolmen Centre, Aughnacliffe

All groups and activities will be recommencing shortly at the Dolmen Centre in Aughnacliffe, (Dolmen Failte Active Age Club – Dolmen Day Care Services – North Longford Men’s Group). Granard Country Markets continue each Friday at Upper Main Street beside the Post Office. They now have local honey in stock as well as the usual supply of beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables; home baking; crafts; firewood etc.

An Siopa is open Thursday Friday and Saturday 10am to 5pm. All monies earned in the shop goes directly and totally to projects in the Community.

Christmas Lights

The Granard Christmas lights committee is actively fundraising to buy and install new Christmas lighting this year. Each business is requested to sell a book of tickets amongst their customer’s friends and family. Let’s all come together to be proud and believe in our town and put Granard at the top of the list as the town to visit and shop in this Christmas.

Irish Heart Foundation

Sincere thanks to everyone who supported our recent church gate collection. A total of €575.00 was collected. Thanks to the collectors for their invaluable assistance.


The Caring and Sharing Association has been active in Longford for thirty years and offers a social event each month to over thirty people with special needs who are from all areas of the county. Our helpers are one-to-one in a group setting offering each person quality friendship and support. Presently we are recruiting volunteers. We welcome volunteers from all walks of life from students of 16 upwards to those who gave retired and wish to share one day a month of their time with another person. Best wishes to St. Columba’s Mullinalaghta who play Emmet Og Killoe in the Peter Hanley sponsored Co Longford Senior Championship final in Glennon Bros Pearse Park Longford on Sunday. This is Mullinalaghta’s first time to reach the final in 62 years, so all their neighbouring clubs will be rooting for them.


The death of Pat Smith, Church View, Granard, occurred at Mullingar Regional Hospital on Wednesday last, 24 September. Removal took place from his late residence on Thursday to St. Mary’s Church Granard. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday morning at 10.00am followed by burial in Granardkille Cemetery. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his wife, Marie, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and extended family circle. The death of Fr. Samuel Holmes occurred peacefully at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital, Dublin on Monday last, 22 September. Fr. Holmes retired recently as parish priest of Cloone and Aughavas Co. Leitrim and was a popular curate here in St. Mary’s Parish Granard in the 80s. His remains reposed at his late home in Drumnahoagh Letterkenny Co. Donegal until removal on Thursday evening to St. Columba’s Church, Drumoghill. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Friday at 12 noon followed by burial in adjoining Cemetery. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his brothers and sisters and the extended family circle together with Bishop and priests of the Dioceses of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise. The death of Dr. Tom Donoho, Castleknock, Dublin and formerly of Carragh, Granard occurred peacefully at Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, Dublin on Thursday, 25 September. Removal took place to the Church of Our Lady Mother of the Church, Castleknock on Friday evening. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 11am in Castleknock followed by burial in Carragh Cemetery. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his beloved wife Nell, sons Niall and Brian, daughters Orla, Mella and Una, grandchildren and extended family circle.
