Ballymahon Traders Association are holding their Christmas Fair in Skelly’s, Ballymahon on Saturday, 22nd November from 4pm to 8pm and on Sunday 23rd November from 12 noon to 6pm offering a wide range of locally produced food and crafts for Christmas. So if you are looking for ideas for a Christmas present, Skelly’s is the place to be on the 22nd or 23rd of the month and its all supporting local people. Ogra Fianna Fail

Congratulations to Darren Hughes, son of Paul and Denise, Clonard, past-pupil of Ballymahon Mercy Secondary School, who has been appointed Leinster Organiser of Ogra Fianna Fail, a fine achievement for Darren. Very much interested in Politics from a very young age, 19 year old Darren will oversee the party’s work at Leinster level over the next 18 months and involve himself in policy and decision making. He will have to ensure that Ogra Fianna Fail is active and working well and he will work as a go-between, between Ogra and their Headquarters. Ballymahon Fianna Fail Cumman wish Darren, a student at NUIG the best of luck for the future.

Christmas Fair

The very popular Abbeyshrule Community Christmas Craft Fair will take place on Sunday, 14th December from 12 noon to 6.00p.m. Anyone interested in taking a table should contact Betty McGoey at 04493 57742 or email The childrens craft workshops will be from 1p.m. to 2.30p.m. and 2.30p.m. to 4.00p.m. costing €4 per child. Your workshop must be booked in advance. Weather permitting Santa will drop in to the children at 4.00p.m. A raffle will be held and all proceeds will go to MWB Autism Support who help organise the event. Your support will be appreciated.

Death of Fr. Thomas Flynn

We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to Jude Flynn, author of the “Fireside Tales” collection and to his sister Peggy and all their relatives on the recent death of Jude and Peggy’s brother, Fr. Thomas Flynn, former Parish Priest in Killoe and curate of Granard for 12 years. May he rest in peace. We take this opportunity to wish Jude the best of luck with his 12th Edition of “Fireside Tales”, which is to be launched at Longford Library on the 27th November.

Mick Flavin

A fund-raising concert is being held in Cooney’s Hotel on Monday, 24th November in aid of the Convent House Day Care Centre, Ballymahon. Special Guest Artist at the Show which starts at 10.00p.m. will be the very popular Mick Flavin. Also performing on the night will be The Sheerin Family, Aisling Wynn, Tony Moran, John Molloy, John Hogan, Camillus Egerton, The Ramblers, Carmel Sheerin and Sharon Turley. Your support for the hundred or so people who attend the Day Care Centre every week will be very much appreciated. Altar Society

The members of the Altar Society at St. Matthews Church work away quietly in the background to ensure that the church is cleaned regularly and that the altar linen and all that is needed for the celebration of the liturgy are properly maintained. New members are needed. The rota consists of a number of teams which rotate their duties, so that new members could expect to be available for one or two hours’ work every five or six weeks.

St. Matthews Folk Band

Young members of the parish Folk Band, please note change of rehearsals day. Practices are now every Monday evening at 6.30p.m. in the Church.

Visiting the Sick

Fr. Padraig has asked that if you have a family member who is in hospital or is housebound that you let him know. He brings Holy Communion to those who are housebound during the first week of every month and is happy to do so for all whom he knows about. C.A.S.A. Sponsored Walk

C.A.S.A. invites you to join with them on Saturday next, 22nd November in a sponsored Walk along the Royal Canal bank from Coolnahay harbour to Mullingar (12 km. approx) or from Mary Lynch’s Public House to Mullingar. The Walk will begin at 11a.m. A Shuttle Bus will be available to transport participants from the Mullingar Park Hotel to the starting points at 10.30a.m. A Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated in the Mullingar Park Hotel at 3p.m. For further details contact 086-4072714.


The organisers of “Self Help Africa” church gate collection in Ballymahon wish to thank everyone who contributed so generously. Club ’91

At their last meeting, sympathy was expressed to their regular musician, Brendan Owens on the sad and untimely death of his sister Catherine Murray, R.I.P. The Group’s next Outing is to the Park House in Edworthstown on the 24th November, details at the next meeting. Why not go along to their weekly get-togethers and enjoy the activities, exercise, skittles, Bingo, Dancing and refreshments. Their meetings are held each Wednesday evening from 8 to 10p.m. in the Dean Egan Hall, across from St. Matthews Church.


Bowls are played every Tuesday night in St. Dominic’s Community Centre in Kenagh. All are welcome to attend and enjoy a cup of tea and a chat.

Eucharistic Adoration

Every Tuesday during Eucharistic Adoration in St. Matthews church, during the winter months, the whole church is heated. In order to reduce the annual bill for heating oil, the Eucharistic Adoration will be transferred to the Church sacristy during the winter months. Heating will be provided with an oil-filled Dimplex heater. Comments are invited with regard to this suggestion, which it is intended to be acted upon from the beginning of December.

A new South Longford Sinn Fein cumman, The Leo Casey-Matt Devlin Cumman was recently formed. The following officers were elected- Chairman – Peter McAleer, Vice-Chairman – Michael Brennan, Secretary – Geraldine Bryan-Devlin, Treasurer – Jimmy O’Connor. A North-Longford Cumman was formed during the Summer.

Goldsmith Literary Summer School A.G.M.

The Goldsmith International Literary Festival group held their A.G.M. on Friday night last in Nally’s “Corner House”. The following committee were elected for 2015 - Chairman – Seamus McCormack, Secretary – Ann Tully, Treasurer – Niall Nally, P.R.O. - Willie Dowler. We wish the committee and all the members every success in the year ahead.

G.A.A. Lotto

Christmas party

The annual Christmas party for the Senior citizens of Tang will be held on Sunday 7th December in Tang Community Centre. All Senior citizens in the Tang area are most welcome to attend.

U-21 football

Hard luck to Ballymahon/Forgney U-21 football team who were beaten on Sunday last by Ardagh in the Shield Competition.

Social Dancing

Is being held again in Cooney’s Hotel every Saturday night from 8.30pm to 10.30pm. (Please note change of time). Everyone welcome to this most enjoyable evening of jiving, waltzing and lots more. Admission is only €5.

Christmas Carol Service

The Innyside Singers together with St. Matthews Church choir are holding their Christmas Carol Service in St. Matthews Church on Sunday evening, 14th December. You are all invited to attend, some of the old carols should bring back lots of good memories for you. Everyone welcome.

Register of electors

The Draft Register of Electors is now being prepared. Longford County Council are running an awareness campaign to make people aware of the importance of being properly registered to vote. Claire writing for Sunday Independent

Congratulations to Claire McCormack, daughter of Tommie and Frances, Moyvore who is now writing some articles regularly with the Sunday Independent newspaper. A past pupil of Ballymahon Mercy Secondary School, Claire wrote a very interesting article last week on emigration and its effects on Irish mothers and another this week on Anorexia. Well done Claire, keep up the good work.

Community Games Gala Awards

The County Longford Community Games annual Gala Awards night was held recently in Rawle’s Pub in Ballinalee. Congratulations to Ballymahon/Forgney who were awarded with the McDonalds Cup which was presented to Shirley Maloney and Madeline McCormack, Shirley was also presented with the Hall of Fame Award by Chairman of Longford Community Games, Joe Fox. Congratulations also to Mary Forbes and Philip Maloney who were nominated for the Adult and Youth Community Games Volunteer Awards, they also received their awards at the Gala Night. Well done to you all, well deserved Awards.
