Granard Christmas Lights committee will hold their AGM on this Wednesday night, 10 September at 9pm in John V’s Lounge. Everyone interested are encouraged to come along please.

Traders Association

A very important meeting of the Traders Association will take place in the Credit Union building on Thursday next, 11 September at 8.30pm. This important meeting is to organise a working group for the forthcoming enterprise Trade Show. All those interested in exhibiting their goods and services are asked to attend including schools and sports associations.


Granard I.C.A. guild held their first meeting after the summer break on Thursday night last. A full programme of events was discussed for the year ahead. Guest speaker on the night was Josephine McGovern-Matthews who gave a very interesting and informative talk on foot care which was really appreciated by all present. Congratulations to our long serving member Patti Fitzgerald on winning the ICA Flower Garden competition recently and to our Federation President, May Campbell on winning the Vegetable Garden competition. Presentation of prizes will take place at the Federation meeting in Ballinamuck on Wednesday, 24 September. All members travelling to the Federation are requested to meet at the Community Centre at 6.30pm.

Art Appreciation

Are you interested in the history of art and discovering some of the greatest paintings in the world then join renowned art critic and historian Ciaran McGonigal for a series of talks in Granard Branch Library commencing on this Thursday 11 September evening at 7.30pm.

Local Honey

Granard Country Markets continue each Friday at Upper Main Street beside the Post Office. They now have local honey in stock as well as the usual supply of beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables; home baking; crafts; firewood etc.


There will be a Whist Drive on Tuesday next, 16 September in The Community Centre, Granard commencing at 9pm. Proceeds in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind. Please support.

Suicide Prevention Day

World suicide Prevention Day is on this Wednesday, 10 September. An Ecumenical Service of Remembrance and Hope will be held in Christ the King Cathedral Mullingar on Wednesday at 7.30pm with the aim of creating awareness of suicide prevention supporting those bereaved by suicide and giving a message of hope for the future. All are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served afterwards.

Solas Nua

Are you widowed, separated or divorced? Are you coping with grief – Alone? If so Solas Nua could be for You. For those who have lost a spouse or long-term partner through death separation or divorce. A healing programme which enables one to deal with grief. A trained team who are themselves in the same position share their journey through grief with you. Ballymore Ladies

Ballymore Ladies Football Club would like to thank most sincerely the Ballymore Mens Development committee for their very generous donation from the recent Barbeque at McElvaney’s.  Many thanks to the three Chefs on the night, John Joe, Gary and James.  We really appreciate this help to our Club as we prepare for our Senior Championship final against Killoe on Saturday 13th September in Pearse Park. We are currently looking for sponsorship and would appreciate any contributions to help us prepare for this final when the ladies will endeavour to bring the cup back to Ballymore and hope all our supporters will turn out on the 13th to cheer on the girls. Many thanks again to the Ballymore Development Committee. 

Coffee morning

A coffee morning in aid of Longford Hospice will be held in the Resource Centre, Granard on Thursday, 18th September from 10 to 1pm and again in McElvaney’s, Coolarty from 7 to 10.     

Charity Cycle

St Mary’s Parish Park Society

The society would like to thank all who contributed to their recent church gate collection.  The proceeds will go towards planned park improvements. Your continued support is appreciated.

Granard Visitor Centre Project

Our rescheduled public meeting will take place on Monday night next, 15 September in the Community Centre, Barrack St. at 9pm. Our monthly draw for August will also take place on the night. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. We have recently received contracts for the purchase of the property so we hope to complete this phase of the project shortly.

Talent Contest

Granard Credit Union Launches Talent Contest CU factor - Have you got the CU factor? if yes you could be on your way to winning the top prize of €500 courtesy of Granard Credit Union. Ten to nineteen year olds in Granard area are being invited to share their talents as part of a new talent competition in the area organised by Granard Credit Union. The talent show is open to all dancers, singers, bands, jugglers, comedy acts etc . The closing date for applications is 25 September 2014. Auditions are scheduled to take place on Saturday 27 September and the local final will take place in Granard Community Centre on Saturday 4 October. The top two acts will go forward to represent Granard Credit Union in the regional final on Saturday the 18 October in Ballinasloe with a top prize of €1,000. Application forms are available from the counter in Granard Credit Union.

Ruby Anniversary

Congratulations to John and Kitty Farrell, Main Street, Granard who celebrated their 40th Wedding anniversary on 5 September. We wish them many more happy and healthy years of wedded bliss.


A Benefit /fundraising night with raffle for Hamper and numerous other prizes will take place in Crawford’s Lounge, Abbeylara on Saturday, 13 September. Lines are currently on sale in local shops and other outlets €3 per line or 2 for €5. The event is aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital and all proceeds go directly to the Hospital. Entertainment on the night will be provided by Mary O’Connor. Your support will be appreciated.

Temple Street

Team Feely have been given generous sponsorship by Pat the Baker for Temple Street Children’s University Hospital. Michael Meaney presented the cheque from Pat the Baker recently. This money has now been lodged into the Bank account of Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Artane, Dublin.

Social Dancing

Social Dancing commences in the Park House Hotel, Edgeworthstown on this Thursday, 11 September from 9.00pm to 11.00pm. Come along for a night of fun and great exercise. Admission is €5.00. All are welcome.

Irish Dancing Lessons

Lough Derg
